Friend or Foe. During the Second World War German Prisoners of War arrived in Canada and placed in large interment camps across the country. Many were given a chance to go to much smaller labour camps to work in the forestry, agriculture or construction industries. Thousands went from the battlefield to the great outdoors. For some but not all, these experiences transformed them in a positive way, while others were transformed back to who they were before the war. The best quote was by a Lake of the Woods POW Johannes Leiberwirth, in the post photo, who said "We came as temporary enemies in war and we left as permanent friends in peace."

Learn more about the POWs in Canada at the Lake of the Woods Museum Freature Galley titled - POWS: German Prisoners of War on Lake of the Woods 1943-1946.
This Feature Gallery runs until November 14 and is part of regular museum admission.

Kenora's Gary Bergman was known as a tough, physical defensemen by his teammates and opponents in the NHL. But during the 1972 Summit Series the Russian opponents only saw a balding veteran player not to be overly concerned about as a threat. A few hip checks later, he was now always on their mind when coming down the ice with the puck, not knowing if Bergman was going to get them with another bodycheck. Bergman was never known as a dirty player, looking for trouble on the ice, but was always considered tough as nails defender.

Learn more about Kenora's Gary Bergman at the Lake of the Woods Museum. The Gary Bergman Feature Gallery - Bergie - Kenora’s Great Defender and Eight Games in September - 1972 Summit Series Canada versus Soviet Union - will be on display until November 14. It is part of regular museum admission.

BOUND TO CREATE: The Painted World of Charles van Sandwyk

A special Artist Reading was held on the morning of July 17th by Charles van Sandwyk, who read from his beautifully illustrated books. Later that evening, an Artist Reception was held where he dove deeper into his thought process and told stories from his past. On July 18th, he held a special workshop to create Dream Journals, and passed down some watercolour and calligraphy techniques to those who attended. Thank you so much to Charles van Sandwyk for his involvement with the Douglas Family Art Centre and making the opening week of BOUND TO CREATE so unforgettable.

The exhibition is on until September 19th. Stop by to see this magical world!

This exhibition and these programs have been generously supported by the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Community Foundation.

Friends on a Hunting Trip or POW's at a Labour Camp. This photo could go either way, but these are actually German Prisoners of War at a labour camp on Lake of the Woods during the Second World War. POW's were given a choice, stay in the larger internment camps or go work in a labour camp somewhere across Canada. Many voluntarily went to the labour camps where they would be feed, housed and clothed. They would earn wages and live close to a normal life (some of the prisoners in the photo were wearing their newly purchased clothes from the Eaton catalogue). They would go fishing and make crafts in their spare time. No fences to hold them in, just the wilds of Canada.

Come learn more about the POW Camps on Lake of the Woods at the Lake of the Woods Museum with their Feature Gallery exhibit - POWS: GERMAN PRISONERS OF WAR ON LAKE OF THE WOODS, 1943 – 1946.

This exhibit runs until November 14 and is part of the museum's regular admission

We've been restocked! After selling out twice, I have a new shipment of prints, cards and hand made books by Charles van Sandwyk at the Art Centre gift shop. If you haven't done so, take in this magical, whimsical exhibition 'Bound to Create: The Painted World of Charles van Sandwyk.'

The artist is a writer, poet, and illustrator. Inside his greatly collected handmade books are charming fables of fauna and magical creatures such as fairies, gnomes, living trees, mice, birds, toads and hedgehogs. Van Sandwyck’s colourful art excites the inner child in all of us who believes in charming characters, and wholesome imaginary delight.
