I’m not sure I buy every part of this, including the idea that “every storm benefits someone.”
But what stayed with me was the response Edward Povey proposes to the storm: learn more, develop skill, be patient, don’t copy, and work until **you** are impressed, not everyone else.
There is something in that I find increasingly important.
The art world gives us plenty of reasons to ask: What is working now? What gets noticed? What should I be making? How do I position myself?
Those questions can be useful, but they can also quietly become a way of making the work safer before it has had time to become itself.
Maybe that is the part I’m taking from this: pay attention to the weather, certainly. Just don’t let it become your compass.
