September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. 🧡

Today, the Kootenay Lake Historical Societies remember the children who never returned home, honour Survivors and their families, and acknowledge the ongoing impacts of residential schools.

Preserving history means telling the truth, including the difficult truths of our shared past. We are committed to listening, learning, amplifying Indigenous voices, and supporting the ongoing work of meaningful reconciliation in the Kootenay Lake region.

🧡 Every Child Matters.

Announcing a New Book About our Beloved S.S. Moyie!

We’re delighted to share the wonderful new book by renowned maritime historian Bob Turner:

The Paddlewheeler S.S. Moyie: The Sweetheart of Kootenay Lake

The book has just received a terrific review in The British Columbia Review, which calls it a “handsome, lavishly illustrated full colour publication” and praises Turner’s detailed and engaging account of the Moyie, her history, technology, and the remarkable story of her preservation.

As the review notes, the book is both a fascinating history and a great read and a perfect souvenir for anyone who loves the Moyie and the history of Kootenay Lake.

Copies are available now at the Kaslo Visitor Centre, at the S.S. Moyie, 324 Front Street, Kaslo.

Come by, pick up a copy, and take home a piece of the story of this remarkable vessel and the community that worked for generations to preserve her.
