Rainbow Wednesday! 💜

This week’s colour is violet, and there’s a little more of it growing in our gardens than you might expect!

Harvest time is well underway at Highland Village, and among the crops we’re finding some beautiful pops of purple. Our blue potatoes may look ordinary enough on the outside, but cut them open and you’ll find a beautiful violet-purple inside! We’ve also got purple turnips and purple beets adding even more colour to the harvest.

From the garden to the table, there’s always something colourful growing at Highland Village!

Its hard to believe it’s three weeks since Stòras’ a Bhaile started. A big thanks to everyone who took part. Here are a few photos from the wonderful week we had. Tales, songs, and Gaelic galore!

This week’s Nova Scotia Museum theme is !

While our site may look a little different when it comes to animals this year, there’s one group we’ve always been able to count on: our wild village foxes! Also known as 'madadh-ruadh' in Gaelic.

Every spring, we look forward to seeing the foxes and their kits making their way around our site. They don’t usually stick around for long, but their yearly visits have become a welcome sign that a new season at Highland Village has begun.

We’re always happy to share the Village with our wild neighbours and look forward to seeing who stops by each year!🦊🧡

We may have missed yesterday, but our furry friends are far too important to us not to give them a shout out!

Dogs are always welcome at Highland Village, as long as they’re kept on a leash. 🐕‍🦺 We love seeing you explore and enjoy our site with your furry companions by your side!

His Honour The Honourable Mike Savage, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, and Her Honour Ms. Darlene Savage delighted us with a visit to Highland Village Museum yesterday.

During their time on site, Their Honours explored our historic buildings and, along the way, took the time to listen to the stories and experiences shared by our talented, costumed animators. They also participated in a traditional milling frolic and joined staff and Board members for a ceilidh in An t-Àite Cruinneachaidh (The Gathering Place).

Throughout their time with us, Their Honours showed a genuine interest in the work we do here at Highland Village, asking thoughtful questions and engaging with our staff, volunteers, and animators. We greatly appreciated their enthusiasm and curiosity, and the opportunity to share the history, traditions, music, and culture that make Highland Village such a special place.

It was a pleasure to welcome Their Honours to Highland Village and share a little of Cape Breton’s rich Gaelic heritage with them. We are so grateful for their interest in the work we do and hope to have the opportunity to welcome them back to the Village in the future.

It's Rainbow Wednesday🌈

This week’s colour is indigo, and there’s no better way to celebrate it than with a look at an indigo dye pot!

Indigo has been used for centuries to create beautiful shades of deep blue. Unlike many natural dyes, indigo dyeing is a unique process where the fabric comes out of the dye pot looking green before changing to blue as it gets exposed to oxygen

From the dye pot to the finished cloth, there’s a little bit of magic in every piece!

Here’s a little glimpse into how we start our day! Every morning, our staff gather for the morning meeting, and we like to finish things off with a Gaelic song from a staff member. It’s a pretty good way to start the day! ☀️

DYK: There’s more to our Land & Culture Walk than a walk through the landscape 🌿

Each Monday, we explore the land through L’nu and Gaelic perspectives, sharing songs and stories along the way and learning about some of the plants growing around us.

The experience ends as many good visits do: gathered together with something to eat and drink. Guests can sample teas made with a variety of plants foraged here at Baile nan Gàidheal, alongside a piece of traditional four-cent cake and molasses.

Come walk with us this Monday and experience how land, culture and hospitality come together.

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again when we have to say goodbye to our fantastic summer staff.

We’ve been so fortunate to have such a wonderful crew join us on the hill for our 2026 season. Some faces may look familiar, as we were lucky enough to welcome back several returning staff members, while also welcoming a few new faces to the team this year.

Together, they’ve helped us welcome countless visitors, share our stories, and bring the village to life throughout the summer. We truly can’t thank them enough for all the hard work, enthusiasm, and dedication they’ve brought to Highland Village.

We’ll miss having them on the hill and wish them all the very best as they head into the fall!

One weave at a time, something beautiful takes shape. 💙

It’s Rainbow Wednesday, and today’s colour is blue! So we’re celebrating with something fresh off the loom!

This beautiful piece came off the loom at Àite Dhòmhnaill Theàrlaich this past week. Made with a blend of linen and cotton, this cloth will soon be transformed into 12 unique tea towels, each one modeling the care, skill, and tradition that goes into all of our weaving on site.
