Welcome to the Museum of the Highwood page! Along with our Instagram page and website we are pleased to be able to share all museum updates and happenings! Here we feature our “archival photo of the day”, in which we share an image from our collection along with a caption that is put together with information we have available for that particular image. Interactions with these photos help us to update our database with accurate information so we are always happy to receive respectful corrections or further information in the comment sections. We do ask that you kindly follow these simple set of rules and regulations when interacting on this page:

1. Negative, hurtful or aggressive comments of any kind will not be tolerated. We are proud to provide a welcoming and positive space to share stories and history of the Highwood area. Comments like these will be removed.

3. No profanity or offensive language. We are a family friendly page.

4. Hate speech and bullying will not be tolerated.

5. Corrections to our archival photo of the day are always welcome and gratefully accepted as long as they are presented respectfully. We are happy to work as a team with fellow High Riverites, past and present, to preserve our history accurately while sharing memories and stories to enhance this wonderful community. Solving history mysteries takes teamwork! We reserve the right to remove any comments that do not meet with these standards. We work hard to provide an positive online experience where we can showcase our amazing history, share stories and memories and build connections. Thank you for your support!

🌟 Artist Feature of the Month - Sue Stegmeier 🌟

“The artist was always in me, it just needed time to come out.” - Sue Stegmeier

Sue is a long time High Riverite and can’t really see herself moving; something the community is thankful for! Although she finds it hard to see herself as an “artist,” she has spent over 20 years learning, loving, and teaching art.

While Sue has always been drawn to the artistic side of life, it wasn’t until a pencil crayon class in 2001 that she really found her groove. Although she has tried other mediums, including acrylics and PanPastels, she finds herself drawn back to pencil crayons, a medium that she admits can often be time consuming.

Some of Sue’s favourite subjects to draw include cats, dogs, and flowers. She finds that having a direct frame of reference assists her in her creative ventures.

Sue has been involved with the High River Art Society, The Venue, Literacy for Life, along with many other community groups. She also enjoys teaching, and has taught classes at Medicine Tree Manor as well as more relaxed summertime classes with her grandchildren. She believes that “art should not be a mystery” and encourages everyone to take the plunge.

Sue has also been involved in a number of public art pieces, including “A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words.” This was a joint project with another local artist, Joyce Brown. This piece was first located at The Venue but was later moved to the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Centre.

You can find Sue’s work at the Museum of the Highwood, including original pieces (both big and small), magnets, and beautiful notecards featuring her work.

Her piece “What Is It?” is currently on display as part of our “Inspired to Create: Art of the Highwood” until 2027.
