Folk Art, Outsider Art and Self-taught Art Featuring folk, self-taught and outsider art from the U. S. It is located less than one hour east of Halifax.

and Canada, with an emphasis on the works of Nova Scotia folk artists past and present. Opened in 2000, the Black Sheep Gallery is situated in a converted 1200 square foot fish plant on the shore of Jeddore Harbour. The work of over 40 Nova Scotia folk artists past and present are featured, as well as a selection of folk art from Ontario and Quebec. We also offer the work of several well known folk, self taught and outsider artists from the United States including Rev. Howard Finster, James Harold Jennings, Sybil Gibson, S.L. Jones, Mary T. Smith and David Butler. Nova Scotia artists shown at the gallery include Joe Norris, Maud Lewis, Collins Eisenhauer, Joe Sleep, Eddie Mandaggio, Clarence "Bubby" Mooers, Cyril Hirtle, Phyllis Cosman, Barry Colpitts, Charlie Tanner, and Leo, Ransford and Bradford Naugler.

Elmer Eisnor and his younger brother Murray were about as different as two carvers could be. Still, Murray admired his older brother's work and often returned to the same subjects. This spotted fish with its baby tucked safely in its mouth is a good example of Elmer's work.
Tomorrow we hope to share Murray's version of the same subject. Seen together, the two carvings offer a glimpse into the relationship between these remarkable Nova Scotia folk artists.

Cardinals and Gold Finches by Barry Colpitts. A small house on a painted stand with two bright birds lifting off in the breeze. Barry has always been able to capture the beauty in his environment and fold it straight into his work. It doesn’t hurt that he is married to an expert polka dotter who adds the finishing touches.

🎵 Oh those eyes! 🎵 Leave it to iconic Cape Breton folk artist Sid Howard to give this carved woman’s head a set of rolling googly eyes that feel right at home with the sixties single by The Vagrants, but it's those bright red lips that serve as the absolute icing on the cake!

Oh look out, the latest neighborhood news is about to be thoroughly uncovered and the local bakery completely cleared of oatcakes, because this Cape Breton lady by Murray Gallant has laced up her finest two-toned stepping shoes and is officially on a mission. She’s got her tidy little purse, which we all know contains three peppermint candies, a pack of tissues, and the exact correct change for a cup of tea. There is absolutely no stopping that stride when there is news to be gathered, or a neighbor to check up on. If you see her marching down the road with that level of determination, your best bet is to just pull over and offer her a ride. Prepare yourself for the most entertaining twenty-minute breakdown of local history you’ve ever heard.

"Come have a swim with me!" says this stunning mermaid by Nova Scotia folk artist Barry Colpitts. This coastal beauty features a brilliant mane of blonde hair and striking ruby red lips. Barry's signature vibrant style and playful imagination bring her to life. And yes, despite what skeptics think, there just might be real mermaids lounging along the Eastern Shore, after all, where else would Barry get his brilliant inspiration?

This wonderful angel carving highlights the work of Nova Scotia folk artist Phyllis Cosman. Working from her kitchen table, she maintained a limited output that makes each creation rare. Her hand-carved pieces feature distinctive angelic faces, and four of her carvings, representing most of her work from 1994, are part of the permanent collection at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. This piece is shared exclusively to showcase her artistry and is not for sale.

We found this painting at Katharine Mulherin’s Queen West gallery in 2010. Katharine had an incredible eye for talent, and this was a piece she believed in. The striking imagery and the pull of the blue create a powerful presence that stays with you, making it one of our favourites.

If you remember the artist from those years at Mulherin’s spaces, we’d be grateful for any insight. This painting has lived with us for a long time, and we’d love to reunite it with the artist’s name.

Leroy Almon Sr was a central figure in southern folk art shaped by church life and the community around him. His work often carried the themes he lived with and the devotional spirit that guided much of his carving. This angel is beautifully mounted in a shadow box.

Look at the tension in these faces! Nova Scotia folk artist Elmer Killen had an amazing gift for making his wooden figures feel completely alive and deeply expressive.
In Reading Circle, you can practically hear the friction. Are those two men even listening to the story, or are they completely tuned out and debating a recent football game instead? Either way, she is staring them down with absolute determination to reclaim her room!
