Conception Bay Museum, Harbour Grace

Conception Bay Museum, Harbour Grace Preserving the history and heritage of Conception Bay, Newfoundland, since 1970. Tours run roughly forty-five minutes.

The Conception Bay Museum offers a unique heritage and cultural experience for those interested in the history of Harbour Grace and Conception Bay, Newfoundland. Currently at the Museum, we have:

• our 'Aviation Room,' renovated in 2022, where visitors can learn about Harbour Grace’s important role in transatlantic aviation (including the story of the world’s most well-known female pilot, Amelia

Earhart!);

• a 'Pirate Room,' which contains storyboards relating to Peter Easton’s adventures in Newfoundland and on the Atlantic;

• a 'World War Exhibit' (with regimental uniforms), dedicated to the island’s military and naval legacy; and

• a 'Period Setting Room,' filled with traditional late-nineteenth-century artifacts; and

• a rotating exhibit space, which currently houses our anniversary exhibit, '150 Years of the Customs House'

Guests receive guided tours through each room, with presentations specially catered depending on age level, general comprehension, and relevance. The Museum is open seasonally from May until September.

Would it be worse to lose your mail key or forget your lock code?This post office box manufactured before 1920 was installed in much the same way as modern mail boxes. The major difference between this early 20th century design and a modern mail box is the use of a combination lock instead of a key. Users did not have to worry about keys being lost or stolen, but forgetful minds and wandering eyes could also pose problems!

This item is part of our current temporary exhibit focusing on the old Harbour Grace Post Office, which will be on display until August 23rd. Featuring post cards, rubber stamps, and more that will surely give you something to write home about!

On this day 82 years ago the town of Harbour Grace experienced one of the greatest disasters in its history when fire swept through the downtown area on August 17th, 1944.

The great fire of 1944 permanently altered the appearance of Water Street. Before the fire, connected homes and business premises lined the much narrower road, giving the area a character similar to downtown St. John's. Some buildings, such as what is now Easton's Pub, survived the fire, but the townscape of today is practically unrecognizable as the downtown of 1944.

The old General Post Office was one of the many buildings destroyed by the great fire. Even as ruins, the office’s clock tower and gables stood out on the Harbour Grace skyline as a reminder of one of the town’s finest buildings. The former site of the Post Office is now occupied by S. W. Moores Memorial Park.
