Join us for Art as the Fifth Pillar of Health, a special guest lecture by the Honourable Patricia Bovey, former Canadian Senator, art historian and museum leader.

Art as the Fifth Pillar of Health
📅 November 3, 2026 | 2:30–4:30 p.m.

As the first art historian appointed to the Senate of Canada, Bovey has spent decades championing the role of arts and culture in Canadian society. Drawing on her expertise, this lecture will explore the growing evidence linking arts engagement with health and well-being, and how stronger connections between the arts and health sectors can benefit individuals and communities.

Wednesday, September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Today, we make space to honour Indigenous survivors of the residential school system, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the enduring impacts on families and communities.

As a gathering place for the campus and wider community, the museum remains committed to ongoing learning, relationship-building, and supporting the presentation of works by Indigenous artists from across Canada while challenging colonial systems and narratives within museums and cultural institutions. Today, the museum is marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation through a small community gathering dedicated to reflection, learning, and dialogue.

We encourage our community to take time today to reflect, learn, listen, and honour the experiences of survivors, their families, and their communities.

Drawing on the Connected Histories exhibition on view this Fall, Nnake will explore the development of the telegraph in colonial Nigeria and the contributions of the African workers who sustained Nigeria’s telegraph networks between 1925-45. The talk will also consider how photographs and other visual sources can help uncover histories of African labour, expertise and technology that textual records alone may not reveal.

Wen asked about the placement, Banmeet said, “I’m looking forward to being part of the museum community, learning from the people around me, and seeing firsthand how museums can bring people together across both McMaster and the broader Hamilton community.” Welcome, Banmeet!
