– Temporarily moving out of the museum has reminded all the staff and volunteers of all the hidden secrets the building holds. Last week we finished cleaning out a storage room in the basement and behind a storage unit we rediscovered this cast iron stove from around the 1880s. Every day we are finding these little treasures of time that speak to the history of Admiralty House.

Le déménagement temporaire du musée a rappelé à tout le personnel et aux bénévoles tous les secrets cachés que le bâtiment recèle. La semaine dernière, nous avons terminé de nettoyer une salle de stockage au sous-sol et, derrière un box de stockage, nous redécouvrons ce poêle en fonte datant des années 1880. Chaque jour, nous découvrons ces petits trésors du temps qui parlent de l'histoire d'Admiralty maison.

– Check out this rare behind the scenes look at the third floor of Admiralty House. Built between 1814-1819 to be the home of the Commander in Chief of the North American Station for the Royal Navy, this floor was where the staff that ran the house lived. The house was built by the carpenters, masons, and labourers of the Halifax Dockyard. This video shows the unique craftmanship of the third floor. due to a series of miscommunications, the house was built with brick from the main floor all the way to the top. This insulation protected it during the 1917 Halifax Explosion. Also, in 1974 when the third floor opened as an RCN museum each of these rooms housed the original exhibits. The layout of these rooms has remained the same for the past 200 years.

Découvrez ce rare aperçu des coulisses du troisième étage d'Admiralty House. Construite entre 1814 et 1819 pour être la résidence du commandant en chef de la North American Station for the Royal Navy, cet étage était l'endroit où résidait le personnel qui dirigeait la maison. La maison a été construite par les charpentiers, maçons et ouvriers du chantier naval de Halifax. Cette vidéo montre le savoir-faire unique du troisième étage. The packing continues! By the end of the month the museum’s collection will be all packed for long-term storage. Though the packing process has been going well we have come across a few “complicated to pack” items. Currently our favorite figurehead from HMS URGENT stands alone in a room once filled with naval history until we are able to pack it. One of the first to be displayed in the museum will be one of the last to leave.

Le packing continue ! D'ici la fin du mois, la collection du musée sera entièrement emballée pour un stockage à long terme. Bien que le processus d'emballage se soit bien déroulé, nous avons rencontré quelques articles « compliqués à mettre en bagage » dans notre collection. Actuellement, notre figure de proue préférée du HMS URGENT se trouve dans une pièce autrefois remplie d'histoire navale jusqu'à ce que nous puissions la remplir. Sarah’s book is a beautiful tribute to the relationship between Jane Austen and her younger brother Charles’s wife, F***y Palmer Austen. Two of Austen’s brother's were posted to Halifax with the Royal Navy. Sir Francis Austen for a time lived at Admiralty House.

The museum may be closed but if you happen to be on .bfc.halifax take a moment to see our beautiful garden and lilac trees that are starting to bloom!

- we made it to the end of another week of packing! Half of the packing process has been preparing the artifact crates. Every crate must be lined and padded out with archival safe materials to keep the items that are being stored in them safe. Here are a few photos of our team doing this packing.

La moitié du processus d'emballage a consisté à préparer les Caisses d'artefacts. Chaque caisse doit être doublée et rembourrée avec des matériaux archivistiques pour garder en sécurité les objets qu'elle entrepose. Voici quelques photos de notre équipe en train de faire ses valises.

– And just like that … a couple more exhibits are packed and deconstructed. Our museum team of volunteers, military personnel and staff have been making good progress!

Et juste comme ça... quelques autres expositions sont presque remplies et déconstruites. Notre équipe du musée, composée de bénévoles, de militaires et de personnel, fait de bons progrès !

Yesterday we achieved a big milestone in our packing process! Thanks to all the hard work being done by our staff, students, volunteers and our military people! Today we shipped off to storage 20 collection crates and we have almost wrapped to pack all of the art collection. Bravo Zulu to our team!

Hier, nous avons franchi une étape importante dans notre processus de préparation ! Merci à tout le travail accompli par notre personnel, nos étudiants, nos bénévoles et nos militaires ! Aujourd'hui, nous avons envoyé en stockage 20 caisses de collecte. Bravo Zulu à notre équipe !

– Check out this great photo of one of the oldest artifacts in the collection being packed. This window was made to commemorate the founding of the Halifax Dockyard but also highlights the change from a Royal Navy yard to a Canadian dockyard. Thank you to all of our military members who have been working hard to help us pack the museum!

The packing continues… the other day we packed our signature ship badge wall. Many visitors over the years have commented on how much they love seeing all the badges and the unique history that they represent. It was sad to see it packed, but like many items in our collection it is only farewell for now.

Le bagage continue... L'autre jour, nous avons rempli notre mur de badges signature. Au fil des années, de nombreux visiteurs ont commenté combien ils aiment voir tous les badges et l'histoire unique qu'ils représentent. C'était triste de le voir prêt, mais comme beaucoup d'objets de notre collection, ce n'est pour l'instant qu'un adieu.
