Each piece of wood inspires its own carving resulting in a form of grace and attitude. The wood, often with knarls and unique shapes, comes from the bush and saw mills in the Haliburton area. The structure of the wood and the nature of the grain enable Terry to bring an expression of warmth and rhythm to every sculpture. He carefully scrutinizes each piece to anticipate how the wood will withstand
each stage of carving. Stress cracks or splits can destroy both the investment of time and the emotional energy that is carried into each sculpture. Terry explains that "the initial shaping of the form is exciting and the expression that I take from the wood literally surges forth". This passion is obvious in Terry's sculptures. The carver's art lies in knowing how to remove only the surplus wood and not a sliver more. The finishing of the sculpture requires persistence and infinite patience.
