The Art Gallery of Guelph is saddened to learn of the passing of renowned Canadian artist David Thauberger (1948–2026).

Rooted in the landscapes and communities of Saskatchewan, Thauberger developed a distinctive visual language and mixed media technique that brought new attention to the architecture, popular culture, and everyday iconography of the Prairies, while also engaging iconic tourist landscapes such as Niagara Falls. Drawing on folk art, postcards, commercial imagery, and the built environment, his vivid and often playful works transform the familiar into something at once spectacular and unexpected as in this 1983 painting in the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Guelph – Observation Point – pictured here.

We extend our condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the many communities shaped by his life and work.

Temporary Closure | August 31 – September 9 📣

Please note that from August 31 to September 9, AGG will be closed to the public while work is underway on our main entrance. While installation of our fall exhibitions continues, the Gallery Shop will reopen on September 10.

This is the final week to view our summer exhibitions, Couzyn van Heuvelen: CAMP and Windfall Light! Be sure to visit the AGG before they close on August 30.

Last week's Walking as Remapping with photographer Susan Dobson in the Guelph Arboretum 🌿

in 1920, Canadian printmaker and painter Alex Colville was born.

Known for his carefully constructed realist compositions and distinctive pointillist approach, Colville’s works are imbued with a sense of stillness and unease. Throughout his lifetime, this notable Canadian artist gained significant recognition for his unique visual language, exploring themes of mortality, isolation, and the tensions of everyday life.

The AGG proudly houses several works by Alex Colville in its permanent collection, including these serigraphs. Swipe to take a closer look!

Interested in exploring printmaking in a free, drop-in environment? Join us this coming Tuesday, August 25 between 10 am and 3 pm for CAMP DAYS: Community Printmaking 🎨

Attendees of all ages and abilities are invited to experiment with different printmaking techniques, make something of their own, and add their mark to a collaborative community banner that will be displayed in the gallery until September 16. Free - all materials will be provided.

During each week of Camp Create 2026, budding artists have found inspiration in this mini exhibition in the AGG’s lecture room. Featuring a variety of works from the gallery’s permanent collection, the display has sparked creativity and encouraged campers to explore their own artistic ideas 🎨

A big thank you to AGG staff members Leah Orellana-Banning and Avianna Del Piero, for curating and installing this wonderful mini exhibit!
