Featured Artifact
Object ID: X2024.3.1

One of five silver metal work tokens from the Grimsby Canning Company, Building No. 7.

Engraved around the outer edge on one side is “Grimsby Canning Co.” with a four-point central design in the middle. The reverse side is engraved with “No. 7.”

Originally established in the early 1900s, the Grimsby Canning Company was an important part of the region’s fruit industry. Operating out of a large plant on Livingston Avenue, the company processed locally grown peaches, plums, pears, tomatoes, and fruit pulp under the “Tartan” and “Colonial” brand names before the facility was demolished in 1960.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST:

The Town of Grimsby, in collaboration with the Recreation, Facilities & Culture Department, invites artists to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the design and creation of a Veteran’s Mural at the Grimsby Museum. One artist will be selected through a jury process to complete the final mural commission.

The mural will be located at the Grimsby Museum, home to the Town’s Cenotaph and annual Remembrance Day ceremony. Artists are encouraged to consider the site’s role as a place of reflection, remembrance, and community gathering.

The selected design should:
* Honour veterans and those who served from the Grimsby community
* Reflect the history, culture, and values of Grimsby
* Be respectful, inclusive, and historically sensitive
* Celebrate community identity, remembrance, and pride
* Be an original work that does not infringe on copyright

Artists are encouraged to explore themes such as:
* Service and sacrifice
* Diversity of veterans across generations and backgrounds
* Local stories and community connections
* Remembrance and reflection
* Legacy, resilience, peace, and hope

The mural should create an emotional tone that is respectful, reflective, inclusive, and community-focused.

All submissions will be reviewed by a jury of up to five members, and final designs must be approved by the project team prior to installation. Artists are strongly encouraged to visit or research the site and surrounding park area to better understand the mural’s context and relationship to the Cenotaph and outdoor gallery space.

Submission Deadline: June 20th, 2026, no later than 5:00pm.
