Take a road trip across Newfoundland with photographer Ting Ting Chen and her muse, Robert Tilley, as they explore memory, identity and the power of creative connections.

🎥 At 6pm: Unarchived (2022 | 1 h 24 m)
In community archives across British Columbia, local knowledge keepers are hand-fashioning a more inclusive history. Through a collage of personal interviews, archival footage and deeply rooted memories, the past, present and future come together, fighting for a space where everyone is seen and everyone belongs. History is what we all make of it.

Outstanding 😱

SEAL COVE, BARRY COOMBS, 2022! Gouache on paper painting (9" x 13") in our collections titled "Seal Cove" and inspired by the smoked herring sheds at Seal Cove on Grand Manan Island New Brunswick. It's the work of Canadian artist, Barry Coombs, and dates to 2022. Coombs, who is based in the Toronto, Ontario area, has been a frequent visitor to Grand Manan for many years.

Just like that, our pilot season is coming to a close… and what a whirlwind this past month has been! Grateful for everything we’ve learned, the sunsets, and the good company along the way. Thanks for following the journey. More soon!

At the height of the Second World War, a U-boat slipped into the Bay of Fundy and a lone German spy rowed ashore in a dinghy — one of the first enemy agents ever landed on Canadian soil. For two and a half years he lived undetected in Canada, travelling across much of the country, and even living a mere stone's throw from Parliament!

After an extended dispute with the federal government, Backyard History's Andrew MacLean finally got hold of the spy's file — hundreds of pages long — including the mind-blowing detail that Canadian authorities so doubted he was really a spy that they sent him back to the Bay of Fundy to dig up the radio transmitter he'd buried when he landed… just to prove to him that he really was one.

That file, along with notes from interrogations, forms the basis for "The Spy Who Came In From The Bay," the big centrepiece story in the newest Backyard History book: 'Wartime Stories From The Maritimes.'

The detail is remarkable!

SOUTHWEST HEAD LIGHTHOUSE & CLIFFS, GRAND MANAN, C.1895! Image from a high resolution scan we recently made from an original glass plate photographic negative now in our collections of the Southwest Head Lighthouse on Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick. The lighthouse sits perched on the top of dramatic high cliffs ranging from 200-300+ feet high. Glass plate negative dates to about 1895 and is the work of photographer Charles E. Brown (1863-1945). It is part of the Charles E. Brown Family collection of over 500 glass plate negatives of this region held at the Tides Institute. We are working on a book that the Tides Institute will be publishing in 2027/2028 that will include about 100 images from these glass plate negatives. The book will be edited with an introduction by Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., Maine State Historian and long time director (now retired) of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.
