Today at Southern Head: Area 51 or Grand Manan? 👽🛸

A full solar halo appeared over Southern Head today, circling the sun above the Coast Guard / radio communications site at the southwestern tip of Grand Manan Island.

Caused by sunlight refracting through ice crystals high in the atmosphere, solar halos have long been read as weather signs, omens, portals, or proof that the island is, once again, doing the most.

Un halo solaire complet est apparu aujourd’hui au-dessus de Southern Head, encerclant le soleil au-dessus de la site de communications de la Garde côtière, à l’extrémité sud-ouest de l’île Grand Manan.

Causés par la réfraction de la lumière à travers des cristaux de glace en haute atmosphère, les halos solaires ont longtemps été interprétés comme des signes météo, des présages, des portails, ou simplement comme une preuve que l’île en fait encore trop.

GRAND MANAN! TWO MORE STARKWEATHER PAINTINGS ARRIVE! Two more oil paintings of this region and into the Maritime Provinces of Canada by New York City based artist, William Starkweather (1879-1969), arrived late last weeks for our collections. They date to the 1920s and 1930s. Posted image is of an oil on board painting titled, "Grand Manan, 1922." The oil paintings were a gift from a long time supporter of ours who now lives in Texas. They join 15 other works by Starkweather of this region and into the Maritime Provinces that the donor has given us over the past seven years. We have two additional works by Starkweather that came into our collections earlier making a total of 19 works by Starkweather now in our collections. The donor has promised us several more paintings by Starkweather in the future.

Last weekend, SeCo took a research trip across to Saint Andrews to visit KIRA (Kingsbrae International Residence for the Arts) during their open studios weekend.

The facilities and grounds were genuinely impressive: large dedicated studio spaces, shared gathering areas, landscaped paths, and a beautifully maintained property tucked into the edge of town. The studio buildings were especially interesting to see up close, with soaring ceilings, generous workspaces, and thoughtful separation between private creative space and communal areas.

Visits like this are valuable while developing SeCo on Grand Manan. It’s inspiring to see how different residency models approach landscape, retreat, creative space, and collective experience.

If you missed last weekend’s open studios, KIRA is hosting another round this coming weekend in Saint Andrews.

La fin de semaine dernière, SeCo a fait une visite de recherche à Saint Andrews afin de découvrir KIRA (Kingsbrae International Residence for the Arts) pendant leur fin de semaine portes ouvertes et ateliers d’artistes.

Les installations et le site étaient réellement impressionnants : de grands espaces de studio dédiés, des lieux de rassemblement communs, des sentiers aménagés et un terrain magnifiquement entretenu à la lisière de la ville. Les bâtiments de studios étaient particulièrement intéressants à voir de près, avec leurs hauts plafonds, leurs espaces de travail généreux et une séparation réfléchie entre les espaces créatifs privés et les zones communes.

Ce genre de visite est précieux dans le développement de SeCo sur l’île Grand Manan. Il est inspirant de voir comment différents modèles de résidences abordent le paysage, le retrait, les espaces de création et l’expérience collective.

Before artist residencies had application portals, selection committees, and PDF support material, artists were already coming to Grand Manan to work, disappear, observe, and return.

Willa Cather first came to the island in the 1920s with Edith Lewis, spending many summers in and around Whale Cove, where they later built a small cottage overlooking the Bay of Fundy.

These portraits from the Grand Manan Museum Collection feel less like celebrity images and more like evidence: the island has long held space for artists, writers, and people looking for distance from the noise.

For SeCo, that history matters. The residency is not being built from nowhere. It is emerging from a place that has already shaped artistic practice through weather, labour, solitude, and return.

Avant les résidences d’artistes avec formulaires, jurys de sélection et dossiers PDF, les artistes venaient déjà à Grand Manan pour travailler, disparaître, observer et revenir.

Willa Cather est arrivée sur l’île pour la première fois dans les années 1920 avec Edith Lewis, passant de nombreux étés dans le secteur de Whale Cove, où elles ont ensuite construit un petit chalet donnant sur la baie de Fundy.

Ces portraits de la collection du Grand Manan Museum ressemblent moins à des images de célébrité qu’à des traces concrètes d’une histoire culturelle plus profonde : l’île accueille depuis longtemps des artistes, écrivain·es et personnes en quête de distance, de lenteur et d’observation.

Pour SeCo, cette histoire compte. La résidence ne sort pas de nulle part. Elle émerge d’un lieu qui façonne depuis longtemps la pratique artistique à travers la météo, le travail, la solitude et le retour.

Today’s archive rabbit hole: the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick now has more than 164,000 digitized images available online.

This photograph shows Seal Cove No. 1 Fish Packing Company around 1905. The resolution is incredible, down to the painted lettering, barrels, clothing, and pulley system.

For SeCo, images like this are not just old photographs. They are part of the landscape we are learning from: labour, family history, coastal industry, and everyday life in Seal Cove.

If you have New Brunswick family history, try searching the Provincial Archives by family name, place name, business, vessel, school, church, or industry. You never know what might surface.

Digitization is preservation, but it is also access.

Yesterday marked 200 years since the death recorded at this gravesite on the Seal Cove Artist Residency land.

Caleb Benson, noted as being from Plymouth, was part of an early wave of settlement connected to Grand Manan.

Hier marquait les 200 ans du décès inscrit sur cette tombe située sur le site de la résidence d’artistes de Seal Cove.

Caleb Benson, originaire de Plymouth, faisait partie d’une première vague d’établissement liée à Grand Manan.

Exciting news! Seal Cove Artist Residency is now a certified non-profit. As of April 3, 2026, we were officially incorporated under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act.

Our office is based at the Grand Manan Business Centre, formerly the North Head School, a heritage building with a long history of public use on the island. Featured here are a 1991 drawing of the building by Eric Allaby, an earlier archival view of the site, and a class photograph reflecting generations of students who passed through this space before its conversion into offices. It feels fitting to begin this next chapter in a building shaped by education, community, and adaptation.

Bonne nouvelle ! La Résidence d’artistes de Seal Cove est désormais un organisme à but non lucratif certifié. En date du 3 avril 2026, nous avons été officiellement constitués en vertu de la Loi canadienne sur les organisations à but non lucratif.

Notre bureau est situé au Grand Manan Business Centre, anciennement la North Head School, un bâtiment patrimonial ayant une longue histoire d’usage public sur l’île. Sont présentés ici un dessin du bâtiment réalisé en 1991 par Eric Allaby, une vue d’archives antérieure du site, ainsi qu’une photographie de classe illustrant des générations d’élèves ayant fréquenté cet espace avant sa conversion en bureaux.
Il semble approprié d’entamer ce nouveau chapitre dans un bâtiment déjà façonné par l’éducation, la communauté et l’adaptation.

Seal Cove Artist Residency is a new artist-led initiative on Grand Manan Island, supporting research, creation, and site-responsive practice. Rooted in the island’s working history and coastal landscape, the residency gives artists time and space to connect deeply with place.

Site work begins in 2026 with support from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Résidence d’artistes de Seal Cove est une nouvelle initiative dirigée par des artistes sur l’île de Grand Manan, qui soutient la recherche, la création et les pratiques in situ. Ancrée dans l’histoire ouvrière et le paysage côtier de l’île, la résidence offre aux artistes le temps et l’espace nécessaires pour établir un lien profond avec le lieu.

Les travaux d’aménagement débuteront en 2026 avec le soutien du Conseil des arts du Canada.

The smoked herring stands, built between 1870 and 1930, were once a thriving centre of herring production. Today, they form an increasingly rare maritime landscape. Through the residency, artists will work adjacent to these structures as site-responsive practice.

Les hangars à hareng fumé, construits entre 1870 et 1930, étaient autrefois un centre florissant de production. Aujourd’hui, ils forment un paysage maritime de plus en plus rare. Dans le cadre de la résidence, les artistes travailleront à proximité de ces structures dans une approche de pratique in situ.
