And just like that, our summer students have wrapped up their time with us! 🥹⛏️

This year, we truly had an amazing group. Future business leaders, nurses, youth workers, educators, public servants, welders, and so much more.

To each and every one of you, thank you for everything you brought to the museum this summer. Your hard work, energy, and enthusiasm made a difference, and we’re so grateful to have had you as part of the team.

We’re excited to see where the future takes you. Best of luck in everything ahead, and don’t be strangers! ❤️

Archie/Pit Rats

Archie the Pit Rat Hero is his stage name, but underground he’s just a regular. Rats were a common rodent in the pits, but also one of the miners' friends. Miners kept them alive by feeding them pieces of their lunch; they did this to keep them from dying and being vicious towards the miners. It worked.

Miners didn’t want rats dying underground, as their decomposing smell would spread to all corners of the pit with no way to remove it. Another benefit of the rats was early detection. When the rats sensed danger or gases, they ran. If you see a bunch of rats running underground, you better catch up to them. RATical ain’t it?
