The North Atlantic Aviation Museum is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our team in Gander!

📅 Start: As soon as an eligible participant is hired and approved
⏰ 35–40 hours/week
📆 Up to 52 weeks

💻 What will you be doing?

The primary focus of this position will be helping bring NAAM’s collection into the digital age!

🎥 Create audio & video tours for our website
📸 Build a digital repository of museum artifacts
📚 Research, photograph, document and catalogue our collection
✈️ Provide tours and interpret exhibits
🛍️ Assist with gift shop and front-counter duties
🧹 Help maintain the cleanliness and presentation of the museum

This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in digital media, research, archives, collections and museum interpretation while helping preserve Gander’s aviation history for future generations!

This week we have our friend Gordon Huie visiting us to share his story as a first responder and survivor of the attacks of September 11th, 2001.

Gordon will share his story at the museum on the following dates and times. Please call the museum at 709-256-2923 to reserve your spot.

Shout out to our Town of Gander town works crew! These folks put heart, and humor, in everything they do. Thanks for your help this morning and your continued support of NAAM. We can't wait to see the planes all freshened up! ✈️💙

Our pipe planes are getting a fresh coat of paint ahead of a busy September in Gander! ✈️

These unique landmarks are a favourite photo stop for visitors, and with many guests expected for the 25th anniversary commemorations marking September 11, they’re among a number of areas around town getting a little TLC.

As September approaches, we’re also encouraging everyone to pitch in where they can - whether that’s picking up a bit of litter or tidying up around your home or business.

A USAAF Douglas B-18 "Bolo" parked awaiting its next mission in wartime Gander. When in service in the RCAF, the B-18 was known as the "Digby." A sign in the foreground warns against smoking near the sea of aircraft.

Have you ever wondered how personnel identified aircraft on the fly? They used Visual Aircraft Recognition Cards like these! Designed to allow for the rapid identification of both friendly and enemy aircraft, these cards highlighted key features such as size, silhouette, and engine placement. Check out this blast from the past!

to the early 1920s and the arrival of Australian aviator Sidney Cotton. Recruited in London, Cotton was tasked with organizing and operating a seal-spotting service in Newfoundland. Never one to turn down adventure, he arrived and set out from Botwood on his new venture. The project quickly ballooned from spotting seals to delivering mail, eventually leading to the creation of a new company: the Hawke's Bay Trading Company. Below is a portrait of Cotton, and one of him standing in front of his aircraft, a Westland Limousine with registration G-EARV.

Today, we look back on the pioneers of North Atlantic aviation. Before Gander Airport was even on the map, Earhart, Alcock and Brown, Mollison, and many others used Newfoundland and Labrador as a jumping-off point for their historic voyages.

​While some proved successful, others—such as Old Glory, piloted by James DeWitt Hill and Lloyd W. Bertaud—were lost at sea. The S.S. Kyle recovered pieces of the wreckage, one of which we have in our collection.

The first of our summer 2026 students will be ending their work term this weekend, and to say that I am unprepared is an understatement. The rest will follow... on to big, bright, wonderfully optimistic futures. We started this year with some new students, some returning, and some that feel like they've been here forever. Some people say that to describe a community of employees like a family can indicate the opposite- those people have never worked at the NAAM. We've been incredibly blessed to find in each other beautiful depths of companionship, compassion, teamwork, encouragement, and a network of combined skills spanning every criteria imaginable. NAAM will be saying goodbye for a final time to some of the longest running students in the museum's history, and oh how bittersweet to let them go, but to know the magic that lies ahead of them. There's something to be said for creating history inside of history- and while they and I have been educating the world on what Gander Aviation is and was, we've been creating our own story of what NAAM is, was, and will be. Thank you all for your dedication, hard work, and support. Wishing you always find what you need in your journeys, and never forget the differences you make in the world. Good job everyone! 👏

If it is not broken, don't fix it! This picture from Gander Airport shows an Avro Lancastrian, a commercial transport aircraft developed from the distinguished Avro Lancaster. Post-war, numerous military airframes (C-47, C-54) found new life as commercial aircraft (DC-3, DC-4).
