The 1000 Islands History Museum provides visitors with an inviting setting to reflect on the history of the area. The building itself is build in a style reminiscent to the original cottages and grand hotels that dotted the islands of the St. In the spacious exhibit halls, visitors will find dioramas, videos and interactive displays designed to educate and entertain.

National Truth and Reconciliation Day is observed annually on September 30 in recognition of the multigenerational impact of residential schools on indigenous communities. Also referred to as Orange Shirt Day, this symbol reflects the experience of residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, to help demonstrate the stripping of a child’s freedom, culture, and self-esteem. As a Museum, it is our role to preserve history, while also connecting the past and present by creating a safe space for important conversations to happen. Today, and everyday, we encourage everyone to continue to work towards reconciliation through the acts of listening, learning, and reflecting.

Staff had the opportunity to participate in the Interpretation Canada conference this week, including the chance to present Outside the Box: Taking the Mystery out of Creating Virtual Tour App. Attendees were then invited back for a tour of the Museum and treated to an afternoon boat cruise after with beautiful weather! A heartfelt thank you to City Cruises Canada, Gananoque location for hosting guests from coast to coast to coast attending the Interpretation Canada 50th anniversary conference!

Our summer seasonal exhibit for 2026, Cipher/Decipher, an interactive exhibit where you can discover the fascinating worlds of cryptology and cybersecurity is almost gone! Only 2 weeks remain to check it out. The photo featured above includes an intercom telephone and telegraph keys. The photo below showcases our very popular enigma machine, which helped the allies win WW2.

Come by the 1000 Islands History Museum before September 7th to see if you have what it takes to work in cryptology by making your own secret messages and solving logic puzzles.

We're heading to Interpretation Canada 2026! 🎉

We're excited to share that we will be participating in the 2026 Interpretation Canada National Conference, happening September 14–17 in Kingston.

This year's theme, “Engaging Place, Shaping Futures,” is all about exploring how the places we interpret shape the stories we tell—and how interpretation can help shape the future.

We're proud to be bringing the 1000 Islands into that conversation.

As part of the conference, we'll be:
🎙️ Presenting a 30-minute session focused on our walking tour
🏛️ Welcoming conference attendees for a 2-hour offsite experience
🌊 Sharing how we connect people with the places, stories and history of the 1000 Islands
