Kunamokst Mural

Kunamokst Mural Spectacular Mural on Galiano Island: 190 artists, 231 art works: but they did not know the image they were creating! Kunamokst: "together" You will be awed.

Kunamokst means “Together” in Chinook Jargon, and represents ‘Unity through Diversity’, which forms the umbrella concept for the stunning 12’ x 21’ Kunamokst Mural. The Mural is comprised of 231 12” x 12” original paintings created by 190 artists from throughout the West Coast, including Roy Henry Vickers and Robert Bateman and 31 of Galiano’s finest artists. Each artist was given a colour palette

as a guideline, but did not know what the final assembled mosaic would depict. They were asked to be inspired by the richness and beauty of the west coast. And as a result, the artists have produced a work that inspires. The best of our wilderness West Coast: a mother orca whale and her calf. Come view the mural on Galiano Island. Open daily in the lobby of the Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa, walking distance from the ferry. www.kunamokstmural.com to purchase prints and view the history

The Galiano Mural Society, a non-profit society, owns the Mural for the benefit of Galiano Island and the artists. Please support the Mural and the Arts, through the purchase of Limited Edition Prints through our website.

Who would dispute the perfect title for this painting? "Underwater Sunshine" is by Kelly Everill, who says "the way the suns light reflects into water and creates amazing playgrounds for our underwater creatures" was the inspiration for this painting. The world of 2020 has changed many things and we have lost many Galiano Community events for last year and this year. Our favourite of course was the Galiano Literary Festival, held at the Galiano Oceanfront Inn & Spa each year, with the Mural as the background for all the excitement.

No festival this year...but the world is getting brighter and plans are underway for next year! We will see you then! Galiano Island Books Galiano Island Tourism

Each piece in the Kunamokst Mural has its own story. And as many times as we look at it, we find another story within a story. This painting of a Dogwood and a Lunar Moth is a beautiful "hidden" contribution by B.C. artist Lynn Erin. You can see more of her work at http://www.fireweedartstudio.com/

Perfect for this first of November morning is this beautiful painting by Gordon Hensche, appropriately called "November Morning – Mid-Coast"
This painting is in Mackenzie Sound, one of the inlets leading off Queen Charlotte Strait. There are nearly 300 Resident Orcas in the area each summer, following the salmon runs. This is November when there are just a few remaining Orcas searching for the Chum or “Dog” salmon that run this time of year. November rains have usually appeared and the area is filled with clouds and mist.

Lewis Lavoie has captured beautifully a solitary bird, on a sandy beach, as the waves are moving past. Galiano and the Southern Gulf Islands are located in a very special part of the world. With a temperate, almost Mediterranean climate, and a spectacular location in the corridor flight path of many migratory birds, it is a bird watchers’ island paradise. The Southern Gulf Islands

This beautiful piece by Elissa Anthony is called "Wasgo and the Spirit Hunters". Wasgo is portrayed on the back of a barnacled Whale in the foreground, The Salmon spirits retreat underwater just above Wasgo. The canoeists in a traditional Haida boat represent the spirits of ancestors past. In the background the killer whales play and their departed ancestors follow behind them. Wherever we go we are one with those who came before us ~ a collective memory. (See more of Elissa's work at https://elissaanthonystudioandgallery.ca/
