Lovely kokeshi made by Gabriola Island artist Ron Crown to commemorate the museum’s Omoide exhibition. They are available exclusively in our gift shop. Made of baltic birch or yellow cedar, they come with a holder for easy storage or shipping.

Kokeshi dolls are simplified wooden dolls that have been crafted for centuries in Japan.

SFN Elder C’tasi:a Manson and ethnobotanist, Nancy Turner launch their new book Plant Teachings from My Auntie, Gathering Coast Salish Plants for Medicine, Textiles, Nourishment, and Ceremony.

Plant Teachings from My Auntie is a richly illustrated compendium of culturally significant wild foods and herbal remedies found within the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. This powerful work serves as a rare treasure for those seeking to foster cultural understanding and ecological responsibility while deepening a commitment to meaningful reconciliation. Central to these teachings is the fundamental protocol of honoring gifts from the land by gathering and preparing them in ways that respect history, spirituality, and Indigenous knowledge.
Through the guidance of Snuneymuxw Elder and Knowledge Keeper Geraldine Manson (C’tasi:a), readers are introduced to Snu’y’ulh—teachings handed down through generations, specifically those passed to her by her “Auntie Ellen,” Dr. Ellen White. From the sacred Western Red Cedar, known as the “tree of life,” to detailed descriptions of 65 different species, this guide bridges ancestral wisdom with practical botanical identification.

Copies of the book will be available at the event and at the Gabriola Museum gift shop.

One more sleep until our Origami and storytelling event!!

Join Origami artist, Naomi Mayer, and storyteller, Susan Yates, for an afternoon of Japanese culture and stories.

Naomi Tsukiko Mayer is a Nikkei fourth generation Japanese Canadian. Her family was forcibly uprooted during WW11 and she has been researching her own history. She is an active member of the Central Vancouver Island Japanese Society (7 Potatoes) and is happy to share Japanese culture through her origami art. Learn the ancient art of paper folding!

Susan Yates is known for her vast library of storybooks and her engaging way of sharing these stories with people of all ages. She will be reading from several story books about the Japanese Canadian experience and forced uprooting during WW11. Suitable for children and adults.

Also included is a short talk on the Museum's new Omoide exhibit and Japanese Canadian heritage on Gabriola.

All supplies included.
