Calling all teachers, elementary school students, homeschoolers, and homeschool parents! We are thrilled to have five free wildlife programs generously sponsored by McElhanney again this fall.

Make a poster or write a short letter with your class (or round up a group of homeschool friends) explaining which of our three wildlife programs (Wild Animals, Rodents, or Birds) you would like to do and why. Please include your school (if applicable), grade(s), and teacher’s (or homeschool parent’s) contact info.

Submissions are due by October 15 and can be emailed to [email protected] or dropped off at the museum. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to/from the museum. Programs will take place before December 15.

A huge thank you to Chris Paull for our amazing flower bed around our milepost. Chris has also been instrumental in planting lots of flowers around our derrick. We are so blessed to have many volunteers helping keep our grounds looking nice from planting flowers in the polio bath (thank you, Glynnis and Bruce K) to mowing the lawn and repairing our mower (thanks Bruce C, Chris, Barry, and others).

Throughout September, we are featuring gifts by Canadian Indigenous artists that are available in the museum gift shop. As the weather gets chillier, puzzle season resumes. We have four gorgeous 1000-piece puzzles featuring Indigenous art – and they are a steal at only $19.99/each! Choose from Daytime Dreamer (red fox), Silent Hunter (snowy owl), Lone Wolf, or Love (hummingbirds).

We also have a smaller 72-piece puzzle in tin for on the go – Carla Joseph’s Hummingbird Feathers for only $10. Check out our gorgeous Indigenous Dominoes set by Micqaela Jones – another great way to pass the time this fall.

“Fort St. John is probably one of the busiest oil towns on the continent, and few have time for fun or sports of any kind. But when Stampede Week comes around everyone goes Western,” Slim Byrnes wrote in an article for the Alaska Highway News in 1957, reflecting on the 1956 Legion Stampede.

Slim went on to say that if a man couldn’t get time off from his job for the rodeo, he just quits until the stampede is over! Slim told a story about some of the kids in the rodeo:

Some of the little cowboys who couldn’t find their parents came to me with their troubles and I signed them in. “They’ll know you’re not our dad,” they replied. “Aw hell, tell them I’m your uncle.” I’m sorta a Dutch uncle to most kids anyway and so the little cowboys rode the calves and the big show went on. They say some numbers are unlucky but the little fellow with the number 13 pinned on the back of his fleshy red shirt road straight into the hearts of the crowd themselves.

When Larry Evans is presenting the historic rodeo footage we have taken by Rudy Schubert, I love watching the audience’s expressions. Some of the best (and most hilarious footage) is watching the kids trying to stay on their calves. Here is a photograph taken by Rudy Schubert of a boy riding a calf at one of our Legion Stampedes (exact date unknown). If anyone knows the boy, please let us know.
