Hugo Viana da Silva’s disorienting perspectives.

Over the course of a two-month residency with Fogo Island Arts, Hugo Viana da Silva produced a series of video studies using two action cameras mounted directly on his body. In a public talk, he spoke of Fogo Island's landscape and wildlife as magical.

"During this residency, I wanted to explore the desire for metamorphosis in relation to animal otherness; the fascination human beings feel toward other species and other modes of existence, and the ways in which they project themselves into animal forms as a means of representing themselves."

Da Silva undertook his residency as part of FIA's Emerging French Artists Residency, a program that fosters cultural exchange between Canada and France by offering early-career French artists a distinctive opportunity to develop new work.

Aïda Bruyère will speak about her work and how it led her to her current project MEGACAPITAL, mapping the music from Lagos to Abidjan and studying what this says about the future of this region. 

Aïda Bruyère lives and works in Paris, where she graduated from École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2020. Through a multidisciplinary practice encompassing installation, publication, printed image, video and sound, her work investigates the representation of individual and collective identities in public and urban spaces, with a particular focus on feminist and post-colonial discourses. Drawing from vernacular cultures, dancehall and nightlife imagery, she dissects performative gestures and the politics of the body, exploring how popular aesthetics shape empowerment and social belonging. 

Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo and Galerie PACT, Paris, and in group shows in Europe and beyond, including the Saatchi Gallery in London, MCA Chicago, and Zilberman Gallery in Istanbul.

Join us next Tuesday at the Orange Lodge in Joe Batt’s Arm at 5 pm for a talk by curator Polly Staple. She will speak about her curatorial thinking, focusing on a recent exhibition, 5 Works, featuring artist Lydia Ourahmane, presented at the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation in Venice. This quietly stunning exhibition has been the subject of much critical attention due to its deep engagement with the city of Venice.

Staple is an independent curator based in London. She previously held roles as Director of Collection, British Art at Tate; Director of Chisenhale Gallery; Director of Frieze Projects and Editor at Large of frieze magazine.

Since 2000, Staple has played a significant role in shaping contemporary art discourse, championing emerging artists and contributing to the development of major art collections. She often collaborates closely with artists to realise new commissions, exhibitions and publications to expand the definition of what contemporary art can be.

Staple is renowned for her award-winning program at Chisenhale Gallery and significant projects with artists such as Ed Atkins, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Helen Marten, Janice Kerbel, Camille Henrot, Ima-Abasi Okon, P. Staff, Mark Leckey and Hito Steyerl. The commissions she produced by Maria Eichhorn, Ed Atkins and Banu Cennetoğlu were recently recognised by ARTnews and frieze as three of the ‘Best Works of the 21st Century’.

Staple is the curator of monographic exhibitions by Lydia Ourahmane at the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation, Venice and Camille Henrot at The Perimeter, London which both opened in 2026.

Fogo Island Arts Call for Applications: September 2026

Fogo Island Arts invites artists, writers, and curators to apply for its September 2026 Program. Two residency spaces are available for the month of September.

The application deadline is August 12, 2026.

Fogo Island offers space and distance from the pressures of ordinary life. Participants live in a saltbox house and have 24-hour access to a dedicated studio space. The studios, designed by Norwegian-Canadian architect Todd Saunders, are bold contemporary structures set in the rocky landscape.

Two studios are available this September: the Tower Studio, and the Squish Studio.

Participants are responsible for the cost of their travel to and from Fogo Island, food and gas, as well as any other expenses related to travel visas and medical insurance. A driver's license is required.

With our new program, Institute of the Cold, Fogo Island Arts invites writers, visual artists, composers and other creative people to spend the month of March on Fogo Island. This residency is for those who are inspired by windy and wintery places. People who like thinking and working when the North Atlantic is a foreboding dark ocean.

Each resident will live and work in one of Fogo Island's traditional oceanside saltbox homes. There is no dedicated studio; the work happens outside as much as inside: walking in the winter wind, watching a storm arrive across land and open water, feeling the light shift from flat grey to brilliant sunshine and back again.

Next Tuesday, July 28 at 5:30 PM artist Hugo Viana da Silva will present a talk in the Cinema at Fogo Island Inn.
oisif lives and works in Paris. A performance artist and filmmaker, he uses the camera and cinematic tools as extensions of his body, proposing disorienting perspectives on the relationship between the body and the world.

Through a system of body-mounted cameras, he restages his own gestures, behaviors, and domestic activities, allowing them to drift toward animal-like forms of life, as if experienced from within, thus unsettling our perception of the human body.

Da Silva will present video studies he has made during his two month stay on the Island. Art historian and fellow resident Johanne Sloan will be in conversation with the artist.

Maria Simmons returns to Fogo Island.

During her second residency with Fogo Island Arts, Simmons unearthed the five bog butters she buried last August. Community members, artists-in-residence, and guests gathered to celebrate and taste at the Bog Butter Solstice event, organized in collaboration with Fogo Island Inn’s culinary team and Executive Chef Timothy Charles.
