MUSEUM MONDAY

In 1897, in Stoney Creek, Ontario, the first Women’s Institute blossomed—an idea that soon spread across Canada like a community quilt. Formed to empower rural women, the Institutes became hubs of education, advocacy, and community-building.

By the 1950s these Institutes, like the Maxwell branch in this 1954 photo, were woven into towns nationwide. They championed everything from safer food to social reform, ensuring that rural women’s voices were heard far beyond the home.

Every second Wednesday for the rest of the year, we’ll be sharing a moment in Grey Highlands history, paired with a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. Just as our shared history never truly breaks, our anniversary art will be created by a single, continuous line… pen never lifting from paper.

Each drawing will weave together familiar landmarks, quiet rural moments, and defining milestones from the past quarter century, forming a visual tapestry of Grey Highlands and the remarkable people who call it home.

Twenty-five stories. Twenty-five uninterrupted lines. One community, traced thoughtfully across time, and this week we’re featuring a story about the beginnings of a community.

INSTALLATION SEVEN: W.K. Flesher

In 1853, a young Englishman named William Kingston Flesher arrived in the dense forests of Artemesia Township. He purchased land along the Toronto-Sydenham Road and wasted no time — building both a sawmill, followed by a grist mill on the fast flowing Boyne River.

What started as a handful of farms quickly grew into a bustling settlement thanks to his drive and vision. Flesher didn’t just build mills — he built a community. He served as postmaster, magistrate, reeve, militia captain, and eventually Member of Parliament for Grey East. The village, initially called Artemesia Corners, soon adopted the name Flesher’s Corners. Later, it was renamed Flesherton in honour of its founder.

Today, over 170 years later, Flesherton still carries the name of this remarkable pioneer. His story is a classic tale of Canadian spirit — one determined settler who helped turn wilderness into a lasting home.

MUSEUM MONDAY

Dr. R. L. Carefoot and his wife, Clara (née Swayze), played a vital role in shaping healthcare in the Centre Grey area.

Dr. Carefoot began his Markdale practice with house calls and patients visiting his Main Street East residence. With Clara’s assistance, it was not uncommon for patients to stay overnight, though space was limited as the couple raised their four children under the same roof.

For a brief period in 1929, Dr. Carefoot leased part of Knarsboro Hall to house and treat patients. In 1930, he moved operations to a renovated residence on George Street, later adding a third floor dedicated to hospital staff. From the late 1930s to 1948, he operated this private facility, which would evolve into the Centre Grey General Hospital (now part of Brightshores Health System’s Markdale Hospital). His vision, determination, and leadership were instrumental in its growth.

In 1948–1949, Dr. Carefoot sold the hospital to the community, allowing it to expand through public funding while he advocated strongly for Markdale to remain the regional healthcare centre.
Nearly a century later, the roots of healthcare in Grey Highlands still trace back to the Carefoots’ remarkable dedication to their community.

Reminder:

May is Museum Month, and we’re celebrating at the Grey Highlands Museum with a special giveaway.

If you’ve visited the museum in the past few weeks, you might have noticed a unique print displayed on our archives door. It’s a test sample for our popular Grey Highlands 25th Anniversary prints, but with a twist. Originally, we designed the posters to be 24” x 36”, but shipping concerns forced us to reconsider those dimensions. Only two prints were made at that larger size. One is currently hanging in our curator’s office, and the other is in our community gallery. For Museum Month, we’re thrilled to offer a chance to win that original 24” x 36” framed print, perfect for your home, cottage, or office.

To enter, simply visit the museum during May and fill out a ballot. Admission is free, and no purchase is necessary. Each guest can fill out one ballot per day. The winning ballot will be drawn on Friday, May 29th, 2026, at 12:00 noon, and the artwork will be available for pickup the same day.

Good luck, everyone!

Museum Monday:

Long before corporate logos and ATM vestibules, Markdale’s banking scene had a distinctly local pulse. In the early 1890s, McCullough & Young, a private bank, opened its doors on Main Street West, nestled amongst a drug store, telephone office, and Division Court clerk’s office.

Constructed of solid brick and featuring a substantial stone basement, the bank exuded confidence and prosperity, reflecting Markdale’s rapid growth. Inside, customers were greeted by a massive cherry wood counter adorned with intricate carvings and beveled glass panels. Luxuries like a heavy modern vault and hot air heating were also present, setting the bank apart as a haven for a rural Ontario community in the 1890s.

Lawyer Pat McCullough and businessman W.L. Young operated the bank until December 1918, when it was acquired by the Bank of Toronto, the predecessor of today’s Toronto-Dominion Bank. Young continued as manager, and by 1921, the Bank of Toronto had built a new, purpose-built bank at the corner of Main and Toronto Streets.

McCullough & Young stands as a remarkable testament to a bygone era when local enterprise, ambition, and craftsmanship sculpted the vibrant streetscape of downtown Markdale, brick by brick.
