Maidstone Museum

Maidstone Museum The Maidstone Bicentennial Museum is run by the Maidstone and Area Historical Society. These programs are run through the newly renovated Resource Center.

The Maidstone Bicentennial Museum, located on the historic Puce River, was constructed in 1875. The original structure, destroyed by fire in 1914, was immediately replaced by the existing brick building and was used as the Township's Municipal Offices for 50 years. The Maidstone and Area Historical Society was founded in 1984; its goal being to preserve and display the heritage and culture of the

area. In partnership with the Essex County Conservation Authority, the Historical Society showcases a beautiful Heritage Native Garden on the grounds containing many unique and rare native plants, shrubs and trees; highlighting this project is the 400 square foot Butterfly Garden. The Historical Society has developed an ongoing Children's Program and Speaker's Program to ensure a hands on experience for young and old alike. Groups are welcome to take part in these programs throughout the year. Come give the museum a visit and see history come alive!

✨Langley Wakes Cakes ✨ totally charming

Some bakes feel like they’ve travelled through time just to land in our kitchens — and these Langley Wakes Cakes are exactly that. A traditional treat once enjoyed during the old summer wake fairs in Derbyshire, they’re the kind of recipe that reminds you how simple ingredients can become something truly special when there’s history tucked inside every bite.

What makes these little cakes so irresistible is their beautiful texture: a cross between a biscuit and a pastry — buttery, tender, and just the right amount of short . They’re similar in shape to Welsh cakes, but instead of spice and raisins, these are studded with a cheerful mix of glacé cherries, sultanas, currants, citrus peel, and toasted hazelnuts . Every bite is a tiny celebration of fruit and crunch.

I love how unfussy they are — just cream the butter and sugar, fold in the flour and fruit, roll, cut, and bake. And when they come out of the oven? A sprinkle of fine sugar melts into the warm tops, giving them the prettiest little sparkle and a sweet “gild to the lily."

They’re perfect dunkers too — whether you’re a tea person, a coffee person, or someone who still loves a cold glass of milk with a biscuit now and then . Comforting, homey, and just right for elevensies, after‑school treats, or a quiet moment at the kitchen table.

If you love traditional British baking, or simply enjoy a biscuit with a bit of character and charm, you’ll want to try these.
