Details of the incredible array of materials used in Breanne Jeethan’s exhibition, The System is Broken.

Jeethan’s ability to take hold and skillfully master different mediums is inspiring. Come by the Gallery to see the works in person, from works on paper to textiles to film prints to glass etchings, the artist has tackled some tough materials to create this show.

Thank you to all the visitors this weekend - we had a fantastic opening for Breanne Jeethan’s solo show The System is Broken. The exhibition runs from now until June 7th, 2026.

The series represents abstract scenes of the clinical workspace and is a response to the fast-paced, stressful environment that is rife with trauma, high emotions, and anguish.

Working between the emergency room and her studio, the artist uses the symbiotic relationship between the two workplaces as a fuel to create her work.

~ All are welcome ~

The System is Broken is a body of work based on the artist’s experiences as a worker in the Emergency Department of a hospital. The series represents abstract scenes of the clinical workspace and is a response to the fast-paced, stressful environment that is rife with trauma, high emotions, and anguish. Working between the emergency room and her studio, the artist uses the symbiotic relationship between the two workplaces as a fuel to create her work. By manipulating and distorting found imagery created by various medical technologies, abnormalities in the imagery are created to signal the bureaucratic structures and power imbalances that undermine healthcare. The resulting series speaks to both the artist’s continuous navigating of her state of in-betweenness, but also to the overarching hierarchical nature of the medical system.

Our next Articulations session is announced!

Sunday, March 29th 1-3pm
Durham Art Gallery
Suggested Donation: $5-$10

Join a show and share of creative works followed by discussion circles focused on practice, community and contemporary culture. The afternoon concludes with a relaxed social and refreshments.

Articulations Format:

Show and Share
Before we dive into our group discussions, we’re opening the floor for a community Show & Share. Think of this as a visual icebreaker. Participants are invited to bring their art, whether textile art, a painting, poem, ceramic, illustration etc. It’s your chance to see what your community members are making, begin dialogues, and to find common threads in our creative journeys. This is voluntary and no formal presentation required, you only need to bring your art, your ideas, and your story about your piece.

The Three Circles
Artist Practice: A space to discuss the "how" of making. We’ll talk about studio habits, overcoming creative blocks, experimenting with new materials and the evolving nature of our individual processes.

Community Focusing on the "where" and "who." This circle explores how we support one another locally, the importance of creative spaces, experiences within cooperation and collaboration, sharing our own stories and how we can build a more connected and inclusive art scene.

Culture & Contemporary A look at the "why." This circle dives into how our work fits into the current world, responding to contemporary trends and the role of art in reflecting or challenging today’s society.

Social Time
After our circle discussions, we’ll come back together collectively to further connect during. This is a space for informal chatting, a chance to follow up on a thought from the circles, swap contact info with a new peer, or simply enjoy the company of the creative community. Refreshments will also be served during this time as well.
