17 students from Native Studies at Chief Ahtahkakoop School are on a historic trek to Fort Carlton in honour of the upcoming 150th Anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6.

"By walking in the spirit of reconciliation, our students are not just studying a historical timeline—they are honoring a living agreement, learning our shared responsibilities, and ensuring that the promises of Treaty 6 continue to thrive for generations to come." said Maurice, 70, event organizer.

The students covered an impressive 140 kilometers in 3 days followed by horses, wagon, and support staff on the road.

The walk will conclude with an official closing ceremony at Fort Carlton on Friday, June 19 at 1:00 p.m. In the meantime, walkers will spend the next two days camped at the Fort, the historic site where Treaty 6 was first signed nearly 150 years ago.

Treaty 6, 150 years since its signing in 1876…
Mistawasis First Nation

Preserved at the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan is a rich collection of stories told by Chief Thunderchild to Edward Ahenakew in 1922. Ahenakew’s notes – written in English and Cree syllabics – formed the basis for his book Voices of the Plains Cree. Ruth M. Buck edited the stories with additional help of Stanley Cuthand who translated Ahenakew’s syllabics.

Both Ruth M. Buck’s and Edward Ahenakew’s fonds at the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan include the earliest drafts of Chief Thunderchild’s stories, including the excerpt shown here (R-20, I.5), one of a handful of stories involving Mistawasis.

This archival record is an important reminder that many archival collections touch upon a variety of subjects. Many of the records shared in this Treaty 6 commemorative series could be of interest to more than one Indigenous group.
