In 1962, a remarkable discovery was made near Cranbrook — a group of ancient petroglyphs, or rock engravings.
Estimated to be between 1,200 and 1,500 years old, the carvings include images and symbols created by local Indigenous Peoples. Numerous artifacts and tools were also discovered nearby, showing that the area held important cultural significance.
The petroglyphs are the only currently known example in the East Kootenay. To protect them from vandalism and weathering, the site was covered in the early 1980s. Before that happened, wax rubbings and latex castings were created so the carvings could continue to be studied and appreciated without risking damage to the originals.
A pretty incredible piece of history has been hiding right here near Cranbrook all along. 👀🪨
