ART TERM TUESDAY: Minimalism

Definition: Is an art movement and style that focuses on simplicity—stripping things down to their essential elements. Think clean lines, limited colour palettes, and uncluttered compositions that let each detail breathe.

Why it matters: Instead of telling you everything at once, minimalist art invites you to slow down, look closer, and find meaning in the quiet. Sometimes, the most powerful statement is the simplest one.

See it in action: Kazimir Malevich — Black Square (1915). One of the earliest and most radical examples of abstraction. Black Square removes representation entirely, focusing on pure form and emotion. It’s often considered the starting point for modern minimal and abstract art movements.

Visit us at the Art Gallery of Northumberland to explore how artists use minimalism to create impact through restraint.

It's International Museum Day!

This year’s theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” highlights the role museums play in bringing people together, fostering dialogue, understanding, and inclusion across communities. As trusted public spaces, museums connect us to stories, ideas, and one another, especially in times when connection matters most.

How you can show your support:

Visit local cultural spaces – Spend time exploring exhibitions, historic sites, and collections across Northumberland County. Consider visiting:
Art Gallery of Northumberland
Northumberland County Archives and Museum
Brighton Arts and Culture Council
Colborne Art Gallery
The Village of Warkworth and District Historical Society
Grafton Village Inn Heritage Centre
Ganarska Forest Centre
Cobourg and Area Museum
Presqu'ile Point Lighthouse Interpretive Centre
Campbellford-Seymour Heritage Centre

Make a donation – Many cultural organizations are non-profits that rely on community support to offer programming, preserve heritage, and keep spaces accessible.

Spread the word – Share International Museum Day content and your visits on social media to raise awareness.

Show up and engage – Attend events, participate in
programs, and be part of the conversations that museums help spark.

ARTS PROGRAMMING: “If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.” — Edward Hopper

Some feelings don’t fit into sentences. Some stories don’t want to be told—they want to be seen, felt, and experienced.

That’s the beauty of art. It lives in the spaces between words, in colour, texture, light, and silence. It speaks where language falls short.

At the Art Gallery of Northumberland, we celebrate those moments where meaning goes beyond explanation—where a brushstroke says what words cannot.

Come explore the feeling behind the art. ✨
