PLEIN AIR PAINTING: Love to paint or want to try painting outdoors? The Art Gallery of Northumberland is exploring the launch of a new, free AGN Plein Air Group!

Whether you are a seasoned pro or picking up a brush for the first time, join us for a friendly, informal outdoor session to capture Northumberland's beautiful landscape and connect with fellow artists. All skill levels and drawing/painting mediums are welcome.

📍 First Gathering Details:
• Date & Time: Sunday, October 25 | 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
• Location: Legacy Antiques property (3565 Hickerson Road, Baltimore, ON)
• What to expect: ~2 hours of painting followed by an optional, relaxed group share (no pressure to show your work!). A basic supply list and beginner tips will be provided.

If there's enough interest, we will continue with regular, free sessions throughout the fall to capture the spectacular autumn colors!

HALLOWEEN ART CONTEST: We are thrilled to announce our annual Halloween Art Contest!

This year’s theme is Nightmare in Northumberland! What if your absolute favorite place in the county became a nightmare? We want to see how our local students reimagine their surroundings with a spooky twist. 🕸️🧛‍♂️

Here is everything you need to know to get your students or children involved:

🎨 The Themes & Categories
Grades 1–4: Spooky School – Give your school or schoolyard a super scary makeover!
Grades 5–8: Haunted Landscapes – Choose any landscape, landmark, building, or place from Northumberland County and reimagine it spooky-style!

📝 The Rules
Medium: Artist’s choice! (Please note: no digital art is accepted).
Tone: Art must follow the theme and be appropriate (think fun—we don't really want actual nightmares!).
Required Info: Submissions must include a title, grade, teacher, and school information.

🏆 The Prize
Judges are looking for skill and imagination! The winning selections will receive a FREE Art Workshop from the Art Gallery of Northumberland for their entire class!

📥 How to Enter
Electronic Submission: Submit a clear scan or photo of each student's work electronically to [email protected]
In-Person Submission: Drop off the artwork directly at the Art Gallery of Northumberland.
Deadline: October 29th, 2026

*Note: Original pieces will not be returned.

Culture Curator: A Place for Our Stories
There are places in a community that do more than preserve our history — they help us understand who we are.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Northumberland County Archives and Museum and seeing their new building. Congratulations to the entire team on this exciting achievement!

A new home for the Archives and Museum is more than a new building. It is an investment in the stories, photographs, documents, objects, and memories that belong to all of us.

As Executive Director of the Art Gallery of Northumberland, I see every day how important cultural institutions are to the vitality of our community. While our mandates are different, the Gallery, Archives and Museum share a fundamental purpose: caring for our cultural heritage and creating opportunities for people to connect with the stories and ideas that shape Northumberland.

Archives preserve the evidence of our past. Museums bring history and objects to life. Galleries create space for artists to interpret, question, and reflect on the world around us.

Together, they help create a fuller picture of who we are.

And this work isn't only about looking backward. These institutions help young people discover where they come from, give newcomers a window into their new community, support researchers and educators, and create opportunities for all of us to encounter stories and perspectives that might otherwise be forgotten. Northumberland has a rich and layered history, and preserving that history is both a responsibility and a privilege.

Congratulations again to the Northumberland County Archives and Museum on this important new chapter. I look forward to seeing how this new space supports research, learning, exhibitions, and community connection for years to come.

Our stories matter. The places that care for those stories matter. And the cultural institutions that invite us to discover, question, and share them are an essential part of what makes a community vibrant.

Celebrate Autumn & Art at Downtown Cobourg's Harvest Fest!
This Saturday, October 3rd, the annual Downtown Cobourg Harvest Fest is taking over King Street, and the Art Gallery of Northumberland is bringing the creative spirit right to the heart of the festivities!

Whether you are strolling the street market, enjoying the live music, or checking out the extended patios, make sure to make a stop at historic Victoria Hall for two incredible ways to get inspired:

🎨 Get Creative Outdoors: En Plein Air Drawing!
Look for our art horses stationed right outside Victoria Hall. We invite artists of all ages and skill levels to sit down, grab some materials, and create your own en plein air (open air) drawings inspired by the lively, beautiful fall atmosphere of downtown.

🖼️ Step Inside: Three Incredible Exhibitions On View
Escape the autumn breeze and head up to the third floor to explore three distinct, thought-provoking exhibitions currently running in our galleries:
• Observed in Motion by Luke Despatie – A vibrant exploration of the energy and routine of everyday life.
• The World We Fear by Simon Martignago – A fascinating look at how architecture physically shapes our collective global anxieties.
• At the Threshold | Selections from the Permanent Collection – Bringing together six works that explore the space between certainty and possibility.

Best of all? Admission to the gallery is always free or by donation, and downtown municipal parking is free for the first 3 hours this Saturday!

ARTS PROGRAMMING: "Art is a guarantee of sanity. That is the most important thing I have said in my life. – Louise Bourgeois"

The legendary artist Louise Bourgeois famously viewed art as a fundamental need for survival and grounding—often turning to the deeply tactile, raw nature of clay to sculpt her deepest memories and emotions. 💛

Looking back at our community Pinch Pot Workshop in Hastings, it is easy to see that same powerful connection in action! There is something incredibly therapeutic about working with raw clay, getting your hands messy, and shaping a unique piece from scratch.

Art programming isn't just about learning a new skill—it's about creating a dedicated space to pause, experiment, and connect with fellow creators. We are constantly inspired by the imagination and community spirit our participants bring to these sessions.
