| Bessie Margaret (Robbins) Godkin | Caroline, Alberta | (1903 – 1996)
When the roads were washed out or buried in snow, the people of the Butte district near Caroline knew exactly who to call: Nurse Bessie Godkin. 🩺❄️
A graduate of the Calgary General Hospital class of 1926, Bessie moved to a farm near Caroline in 1937. In an era of poor roads and almost no local medical facilities, her nursing skills became a lifeline for her neighbours. Bessie served as the district’s unofficial medical advisor and midwife, often trudging through deep drifts or crossing floods to reach those in need. 🏔️🐎
A Life of Healing and Leadership:
The "Home" Clinic: Bessie didn't just travel to patients; she ran immunization clinics right out of her own home to ensure the local children stayed healthy. 💉🏠
Founding the Butte Fair: In 1953, Bessie started the Butte Fair, a community staple that eventually moved to Caroline and continues to celebrate local agricultural life. 🎡🌾
Decades of Service: Bessie’s leadership extended to the Rocky Mountain Hospital Board, where she served for an incredible 22 years, alongside her work with the Red Cross and 4-H. 🏛️🤝
Community Impact: Though her own children sometimes wished she wasn't quite so busy helping others, Bessie was fueled by the knowledge that she was making a difference. She received numerous awards for her tireless devotion to Central Alberta. ❤️🏆
Bessie Godkin was a woman of action who saw a need and filled it, whether it was delivering a baby in a blizzard or organizing a local fair. Her legacy lives on in the health and spirit of the Caroline community. 🌲🏛️
