This beloved game originated in rural Southern Ontario, so it’s only fitting that we celebrate its history right here at the museum! Explore a fascinating collection of historic Crokinole boards, including our oldest board dating back to 1876.

Better yet, don’t just learn about the game—play it! We have boards set up so visitors can try their hand at this classic Canadian pastime.

Come to learn more about an honour our soldiers who served in WWI and WWII, Saturday November 1st from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Mill Pond Gallery, 203 Cargill Road in Cargill.

Speakers include Kent Kraemer of the 160th Bruce Battalion, Bill Streeter, Gary Napper and Eric Edwards of the . Live music from the era by Phyllis Bannerman and a collection of artifacts, uniforms and posters from Jeff Payne.

🏥✨ The Walkerton Hospital stands as a remarkable achievement in Bruce County’s history. Built and equipped practically debt-free, it was said to be the first time in Ontario such a feat had been accomplished.

By late 1902, however, funds for equipment were short — so the call went out to the women of the county. On January 10, 1903, the Women’s Hospital Aid Society was formed, with Margaret Cargill elected as president. Branches sprang up in villages and townships across the county, rallying support.

Between the hospital’s opening in September 1903 and May 1904, these women raised an impressive $2,139.73, contributing to the total cost of $16,645.52 for the site, buildings, and equipment.
A true testament to community spirit and women’s leadership at the turn of the century. 💙

📚🏫 Cargill’s Commitment to Education ✨
Henry Cargill’s generosity wasn’t limited to business—he believed deeply in education. In the 1880s, he built a simple frame building to serve as a church on Sundays and a school during the week. Most of the students were children of his employees, and he even paid the first teacher’s salary—Miss Janet Chisholm. 🍎
By 1901, the little school could no longer keep up with the growing community. Henry bought the building back from the school board (nearly covering the cost of a new one!) and soon, a large brick schoolhouse was built. With enough space for both junior and senior classes, it became a cornerstone of Cargill’s growth and spirit. 💡📖
