Step back in time and discover one of Cargill’s beautiful historic homes! This stunning Victorian house was built by Henry Cargill for his son, Wellington David (W.D.) Cargill, who managed his father’s businesses while Henry served in Ottawa from 1887 to 1903.

The Schmidt Lake Trail is the perfect place to experience this incredible natural landscape! With over 7 km of scenic trails, two floating boardwalks through the bog, and a viewing platform complete with interpretive signs, there's so much to discover along the way.

Open year-round, it's a beautiful destination for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing—each season offers something new to enjoy.

🎯 Celebrate International Crokinole Day at the Mill Pond! 🎯

Join us Thursday, August 20th at 7 PM for a one-of-a-kind Crokinole Tournament featuring something truly special — antique Crokinole boards only! 🪵✨ All boards used in the tournament will be 50 years or older, bringing a piece of history and tradition to every game.

Come early and visit the Crokinole Museum to explore the incredible collection of vintage boards. Admission is by donation.

🏫✨ Big News for Cargill!

One of Cargill's most treasured landmarks is getting a well-deserved facelift! The original 1880s schoolhouse is undergoing exterior restoration, helping preserve an important piece of our community's history for generations to come.

Led by Kevin McKague and supported by the Friends of Historic Cargill, the project will restore the schoolhouse to its original burgundy and white colours while creating a new children's play area beside the building. The goal is to honour the past while creating a space for future generations to enjoy.
Did you know? The schoolhouse was built to help attract young families to the growing village of Cargill, and Henry Cargill even paid the salary of its very first teacher! Over the years, it also served as a church and later as the community's Catholic school.

We can't wait to see this historic building begin its next chapter while continuing to tell the story of Cargill's remarkable past. Be sure to stop by and watch the transformation!

🏛️ Then & Now: The Village of Cargill

Take a step back in time with our Then & Now postcard series and discover how Cargill grew into the thriving village it became.

When Henry Cargill purchased the Mitchell settlement, he transformed it into the village of Cargill. As families settled and local farms flourished, Main Street quickly filled with general stores, clothing shops, hardware stores, a drug store, furniture store, bank, and many other businesses.

Did you know Cargill was one of the first villages in the area to have electricity? Around the early 1900s, Henry Cargill generated power from his own powerhouse on the Teeswater River. Streetlights twinkled along Main Street, and residents paid just 25 cents per light bulb. The power ran from sunset until midnight, with the lights flickering 10 minutes beforehand as Henry's gentle reminder that it was time to head home. On special occasions, like community dances, oil lamps kept the celebrations going after the power was switched off.

Today, Cargill continues to grow, welcoming new businesses while celebrating the rich history that makes our community so unique.

📬 Then & Now: The Cargill General Store

In 1891, Henry Cargill purchased this property and built the front half of the store, complete with its high ceilings and attractive facade, to attract a merchant and help serve the rapidly growing town. A few years later, the building was expanded to twice its size, and the attached house was added. Over the years, the store was operated by the Detwiler and McLennan families, and for many years, the Cargill telephone exchange was located at the back of the building.

Today, this cherished landmark is being thoughtfully restored for housing, with hopes of welcoming commercial businesses once again in the future. It's wonderful to see one of Cargill's historic buildings begin a new chapter while preserving the stories that make it so special.
