The commercial fishing industry often relied on knowledge that Indigenous Peoples had developed over countless generations. Understanding where fish travelled, how weather affected the water, and how to harvest sustainably has always been part of life on this coast.

For thousands of years, Indigenous Peoples have harvested and cared for the rich marine resources of the Pacific Coast. Long before modern fisheries existed, First Nations developed sophisticated fishing practices, trade networks, and stewardship systems that sustained both communities and salmon populations for generations.

Today, Indigenous commercial fishers continue to play a vital role in British Columbia's coastal economy, providing seafood, creating jobs, and bringing generations of knowledge to the water.

Here on our coast, fishing is more than an industry. It is culture, livelihood, identity, and a deep relationship with the ocean. During Indigenous Peoples Month, we recognize and celebrate the contributions of Indigenous commercial fishers, whose knowledge, resilience, and stewardship continue to shape the future of our coastal communities. 🌊🐟
