The Six Crosses
The Bearspaw Historical Society will again place six white crosses in front of the 1920 School from November 1 until
Remembrance Day 2026 to recognize WW1 and WW11 soldiers and airmen from this area who did not return after the wars.

We are grateful and recognize the many men and women from our community who have served our country, both in the past and present, in times of conflict and of peace.

The six crosses recognize the six soldiers who lived in the Bearspaw/Glendale community, between Calgary and Cochrane. Three served in WWI and three in WWII and did not return. The names of the six Fallen were taken from the Rolls of Honour in the book Taming the Prairie Wool compiled by the Glendale Women’s Institute and the list from the Bearspaw Lions Club. All soldiers on these lists have been researched by the Veterans Committee as well as all from the historic town of Glenbow listed in Shari Peyerl’s book Alberta’s Cornerstone.

The Bearspaw Historical Society participated in the Calgary Historical Society 'Calgary Historic Week' on Aug 3. About 40 people came to the historic school site. We provided coffee and cookies in the replica horse barn, then one of our members talked about one-room schools. Following this, the visitors walked around the site, looked at the signs about the 4 one-room schools that existed in the Bearspaw area from 1908 to 1965, and visited the fully restored 1940 teacherage. They then went into the 1920 one-room school and listened to an interesting talk about dairy farming in the area, presented by the daughters of two original dairy farming families. Dairy farming was the main type of farming in this area during the first half of the last century. The presentation included photos of about 30 dairy barns that existed in the area. Only a few of these barns still exist.

Someone has stolen the bronze plaque off the Homesteader Rock that sits just to the west of the Bearspaw Historic school. The plaque contains the names of about 50 homesteaders who lived in the area between Calgary and Cochrane in 1967. The plaque is about 30 x 20 inches by about 1/4 inch thick. If anyone saw anything suspicious around the old school in late July, please email [email protected].

The Bearspaw Historical Society is working on a history of dairy farming in the district between Calgary and Cochrane during the 20th century. If you, your parents or grand parents were dairy farmers in Bearspaw/Glendale, we would like to talk to you. Do you have any old photos of life on the farm, 4H, milking the cows, etc. Please email us using the email on our page.

The BHS will be holding its next regular monthly meeting on May 28 at 4pm in the historic school. Please come and check us out and see if you would like to help us keep the history of Bearspaw alive.
