Before wristwatches became the norm in the early 20th century, pocket watches helped people keep track of time – and watch fobs helped them do it in style. Attached to a watch chain, a watch fob could be ornamental, practical, or personal, reflecting the wearer’s identity and interests.
Today, we’re highlighting a selection of eye-catching pocket watches and watch fobs from Glenbow’s collection. First up is a Victorian-era watch fob made with what are most likely cat teeth, in the style of a Bavarian hunting talisman called a “charivari.” It’s just one example of the striking and sometimes unusual objects wearers chose to adorn their timepieces.
