Before wristwatches became the norm in the early 20th century, pocket watches helped people keep track of time – and watch fobs helped them do it in style. Attached to a watch chain, a watch fob could be ornamental, practical, or personal, reflecting the wearer’s identity and interests.

Today, we’re highlighting a selection of eye-catching pocket watches and watch fobs from Glenbow’s collection. First up is a Victorian-era watch fob made with what are most likely cat teeth, in the style of a Bavarian hunting talisman called a “charivari.” It’s just one example of the striking and sometimes unusual objects wearers chose to adorn their timepieces. Keep swiping for more of our favourites!

In honour of Indigenous History Month, we're highlighting a remarkable carving by celebrated Inuvialuk artist Abraham Anghik Ruben (b. 1951) in Glenbow's collection.

Created in Yellowknife, NWT in the late 1970s or early 1980s, this sculpture was carved from the socket bone of a bowhead whale. It offers a glimpse into the early practice of a distinctive artistic voice, reflecting Ruben's enduring commitment to sharing Inuvialuit cultural traditions, knowledge, and histories.

Today, Ruben is recognized as one of the most influential contemporary Indigenous artists in Canada. His work has been exhibited internationally, from the Louvre in Paris to the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. In 2016, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the arts and for preserving and sharing Inuvialuit culture.

Glenbow's team recently celebrated an exciting milestone: with staff now back in the building, Glenbow's Conservators moved the first-ever art and objects out of storage and into Glenbow's new industry-leading Conservation Lab for treatment.

This marks a major step forward as Conservators begin preparing objects for display upon the museum's reopening. There were smiles and applause all around as the team celebrated this huge moment.

The Conservation Lab is also part of a new behind-the-scenes experience that will debut when the museum reopens. Visitors will have the opportunity to view this space through expansive new windows and learn how Conservators maintain and preserve the museum's extensive collections. We can't wait for you to experience it!

Toronto artist An Te Liu (b. 1967) has created everything from enormous installation works to letterpress prints, but he is perhaps best known for his work in ceramic and bronze.

While his early sculptures often integrated consumer goods such as humidifiers and air purifiers, he later became interested in the materials used to package consumer goods, particularly polystyrene (often called Styrofoam).

Liu collected pieces of discarded packaging he felt had striking forms and used them as the foundations for his sculptures, which evoke both the discarded packaging and the original goods held by the packages.

On our blog, learn about how Liu's interests in consumer goods and art history have inspired his unique approach to sculpture: https://bit.ly/3PMNgzB

In honour of Asian Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the work of an incredible Japanese artist on our blog. Yoshijiro Urushibara (1888-1953) was an internationally acclaimed printmaker whose work required extreme precision and focus.

Urushibara is known for his virtuosic work in colour woodcut — a centuries-old practice he reinvented for a modern audience. His work is defined by a dramatic tension between colours and a perfect synchronicity in process — a combination few artists achieve, but one Urushibara attained in dozens of prints over the course of his career.

His guidance also helped Canadian artist Walter J. Phillips perfect his colour woodcut printing practice, shaping a legacy that resonates through Glenbow's collections today.

May is Leave a Legacy Month: a time to consider how charitable giving can make a lasting impact. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the values and causes that have shaped your life, and to plan for how you can support them well into the future.

Glenbow is deeply grateful for those who choose to include the museum in their legacy giving plans. Your support is especially meaningful as we work toward a once-in-a-generation transformation of the museum into an inclusive, accessible, and innovative cultural hub.
