Devastating news that the The Perkins House Museum will be closed along with 11 other museums in Nova Scotia: Cossit House, Lawrence House, McCulloch House, Prescott House, Ross-Thomson House, Shand House, Barrington Woolen Mill, Sutherland Steam Mill, Wile Carding Mill, Fisherman’s Life Museum and North Hills Museum. There will also be a 20% reduction in provincial grant funding to all museums including the Queens County Museum and our museum.

These museums provide access to our shared heritage, and help to define who we are as Nova Scotians. But museums are so much more than stewards of knowledge - they provide educational opportunities for schools and families, support community engagement and wellness, offer gathering spaces, provide economic opportunities for small communities, and promote a key part of Nova Scotia’s economy - tourism.

Tourism in Nova Scotia generated 3.7 billion dollars in 2025, an increase of 8% since 2024, which outpaced national growth (Tourism Nova Scotia). Closing museums means severing the links to our history and a loss of necessary tourism revenue, which helps all of us. Cutting funding to a significant driver of economic growth, especially in rural areas, is antithetical to this government's mandate to balance the budget, and will cause long-term detrimental effects on our heritage and economy.

Premier Houston,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent announcement that several provincial museums will be closing.

These institutions are far more than buildings — they are keepers of our shared history, culture, and identity. They support local tourism, provide educational opportunities for families and schools, and serve as economic anchors for many smaller communities across Nova Scotia.
Closing museums may appear to be a cost-saving measure in the short term, but the long-term cultural and economic loss could be far greater. Tourism is a critical part of Nova Scotia’s economy. Museums preserve the heritage that make this the most storied and historic province in Canada.

I respectfully ask that your government reconsider this decision or, at minimum, provide transparent details on the analysis behind it and explore alternatives that would allow these institutions to remain open. Nova Scotians take pride in our heritage. I hope your government will prioritize protecting it.

Sincerely,

The survey map for 100 acres granted to Charles Harlow in 1849. This map shows the land between two lakes with Mi'kmaw derived names. Pescawefs Lake (now Peskawesk) and Pescawaw Lake (now Peskawa). A carrying place is shown between the lakes. The Mi'kmaw place names atlas https://placenames.mapdev.ca/ lists Pe'skewey Lake as the Mi'kmaw name for Peskawa.
