It is supposed to be a beautiful weekend. However, try to carve out a couple of hours to go to the Mallorytown Community Centre at 2:00 PM, Sunday, to listen to Dan Black talk about his book concerning the Empress of Asia. Learn how a luxury steamship was turned into a troop carrier in two world wars. Admission is $5.00 at the door and includes the talk, coffee, Mallorytown treats and conversation. The event is the last of this season's Mallorytown Talks and is sponsored by the Mallory Coach House Historical Committee and the Thousand Islands River Heritage Society. All proceeds go to support the Mallory Coach House Museum and the Mallorytown Glassworks display.

Be sure to set aside some time to go to the Mallorytown Community Centre on Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 PM, to listen to Merrickville author Dan Black discuss his newest book. The title is "Oceans of Fate - Peace and Peril Aboard the Steamship Empress of Asia". This steamship was dragooned into two world wars, by the British Navy, to serve as a troop ship instead of a luxury liner.

The cost is $5.00 and includes the talk, coffee and those incomparable Mallorytown snacks. Mr Black is an accomplished speaker so this will be an entertaining Sunday afternoon.

This is the first reminder of another excellent upcoming Mallorytown Talks event. Dan Black, a Merrickville author, will be presenting his new book "Oceans of Fate: Peace and Peril Aboard the Steamship Empress of Asia" on Sunday April 26 at 2:00 PM in the Mallorytown Community Centre. This is a fascinating story of a luxury steamship commandeered into two world wars by the British Navy. Admission is $5.00 at the door and includes coffee and refreshments. Best try to get here early as this is likely to be a sellout.

Another reminder about next week's (March 29 at 2:00 PM) presentation of Mallorytown Talks. Shannon Morrison will be talking about her experiences with Canada's Olympic Teams, school in Australia and her life in business. She will be talking from her book "Your Sky, Your Limit" Learning How to Fly (or Crash). The presention will be in the Mallorytown Community Centre and is sponsored by the Thousand Island River Heritage Society and the Mallory Coach House Historical Committee. $5.00 entry at the door includes the talk, coffee and those famous Mallorytown goodies. Who was Amasa Mallory?

This simple question has many answers. He was not the founder of Mallorytown but was among the most well known figures from Mallorytown and Front of Yonge history. The short article below (compiled by the late Brian Phillips) is a capsule summary of Amasa Mallory.

His Lasting Legacy on Front of Yonge Township

Amasa Whitney Mallory (1819-1906) was a legendary entrepreneur in Yonge Township in the early 1800s. From 2 marriages he fathered fifteen children. He was buried in the Mallorytown Cemetery

Having owned several businesses, he laft a lasting mark on the economy of Yonge township. The Mallorytown Glassworks (1839-1840) was his most famous endeavour. The short- term existence was based on several issues including the unreliability of the glassblower and the non profitability of the Glassworks” -from “Our Cheerful Friend-April 1,1879).

The good news for February is Barbara Fradkin will be back in town on Sunday the 22nd, at 2:00 PM, in the Mallorytown Community Centre. She will be discussing her latest Detective Green novel and will be giving insights into the differences between Detective Green and Amanda Doucette. He will be at the Mallorytown Community Centre at 2:00 pm, Sunday, January 25, talking abut his new book concerning the liberation of the Dutch in World War Two. If you have heard Mr. Barris speak before you know what a powerful speaker he is. Admission is only $10.00 and includes refreshments (those delightful Mallorytown treats).
