Throwback Thursday: Soccer at Britannia Beach, 1918

To celebrate the start of the 2026 World Cup, today we’re taking you back to 1918 with the Britannia Beach Soccer Team. ⚽🏆

Even over a century ago, the beautiful game was a huge part of life in our mining community. These players competed in the Howe Sound leagues, bringing a bit of world-class spirit to the mountainside. As the world gathers for the tournament, we’re looking back at our own local legends.

Who will you be rooting for in the World Cup?

Did you know that Mount Sheer crowned a Dominion Day Queen four times as part of its annual Canada Day celebrations britanniaminemuseum.ca/pages/canada-day

This little-known tradition was a cherished part of community life in Britannia, bringing residents together to celebrate the nation's birthday. Alongside the crowning ceremony, residents enjoyed community events, games, and activities for all ages.

📸 Pictured here is Betty Lou Bogle being crowned Dominion Day Queen in July 1947. Other women who held the title were Joan Scott, Jacqueline Sanders, and Linda Elliott.

A small but fascinating chapter in Britannia's rich community history. Do you remember Canada Day celebrations in Britannia, or have family stories to share? We'd love to hear them in the comments.
