Learn about minerals, the copper extraction process, and what life was like back in the day as the 101-year-old historic Mill No. 3 building is brought back to life! Britannia Mine Museum opens up a little-seen world that fascinates all ages, offering awe-inspiring sights and memorable family experiences. A few weeks ago, we were honoured to welcome guests and volunteers for the Summer Social Gathering, a private event organized by Squamish Nation.

The day brought together Elders from Squamish Nation, shíshálh Nation and Tsleil-Waututh Nation for an afternoon filled with music, entertainment, lunch, laughter and meaningful connection.

It was a privilege to be part of such a special gathering. It was a wonderful day filled with community, connection and celebration. 💛

Here at Britannia, geodiversity has shaped far more than the landscape. It influenced what was mined, where a community grew, and the environmental story that continues today.

As we recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at Britannia Mine Museum, we acknowledge the importance of understanding our shared history and continuing the work of reconciliation through learning, reflection and meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities.

Throughout the day, visitors will have access to educational resources, including a film produced by the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society and a video featuring Phyllis Webstad, whose experience inspired Orange Shirt Day and the message Every Child Matters.

Visitors will also be encouraged to explore the Cultural Journey Kiosk and connect with Indigenous-led events throughout the Sea to Sky and surrounding communities, offering additional opportunities to learn, reflect and engage.

Since 2022, Old Town, New Queens has transformed our historic Mill No. 3 into a vibrant celebration of Pride, bringing together drag artistry, Britannia’s history, and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

The Arthur H Wolf Impact Award recognizes projects that make a meaningful impact through diversity, social justice, leadership, and positive change within museums and their communities.

We’re incredibly proud of our team, performers, partners, and community who have helped make Old Town, New Queens what it is today. 🌈

Mineral Monday x Minecraft: Quartz 💎

In Minecraft, quartz is found in the Nether and is used to craft decorative blocks and technical redstone components, including comparators and observers.

In the real world, quartz is one of the most common minerals on Earth. It has a unique property called piezoelectricity, which allows it to create an electric charge when squeezed or struck. This makes quartz useful in technology such as watches, clocks, radios and computers.

From powering complex redstone creations in-game to helping technology work in real life, a little quartz can go a long way. ⚡
