Elinor Florence, Fred Light's great-niece, grew up on a farm outside North Battleford and attended Battleford Collegiate Institute. Her grandfather Charles was the Battleford postmaster, as was his father before him, Frederick Light senior.

Elinor is an author of historical fiction. Her novel Finding Flora about women homesteaders was released in 2025 and remained on the national bestseller list for 37 weeks. Her novel Wildwood, originally published in 2018, was reissued in April 2026 with a new cover and has been on the national bestseller list for eleven weeks.

Her first novel Bird's Eye View (loosely set in the Battlefords) about a Saskatchewan farm girl who joins the air force in the Second World War, will be reissued with a new cover in November 2026, just in time for Remembrance Day.

Signed copies of Elinor's novels are available for purchase at the Fred Light Museum, along with a non-fiction collection of veteran interviews titled My Favourite Veterans.

Elinor is a career journalist who got her start as a newspaper reporter at the Battlefords Advertiser-Post. After working as a journalist in all four Western provinces, she settled in Invermere, B.C. but returns every summer to visit her family farm, now owned by her brother Rob and his wife Wendy Florence.

Battleford's Fred Light Museum paid tribute to its founder today as a large mural of Fred Light was installed on the facility's north wall. Light was a long-time Battleford businessman and an avid collector of historic artifacts and fi****ms. He renovated the former St. Vital School and the resulting museum has been showcasing his collection since 1980.
