Athens and Area Heritage Museum We are dedicated to preserving, archiving, and promoting the history of Athens. Fall Hours: Open Saturdays 10am-12pm September 5th to Decmber 19th inclusive.

The Athens Museum is operated by AAHS volunteers in coordination with Township of Athens Council. The Athens and Area Heritage Museum is operated by the Athens Heritage Society which is a committee of the Municipal Council and has been in existence since 2004. We have permanent displays relating to Mother Barnes, Dr. Leonora Howard King, the Lambs Pharmacy, the British Home Children, The Heroine o

f Charleston, Crawford Slack Paintings, an operating telephone switchboard and much more, Children's activities and programming is available as well as a large archives of local history photos, information and artefacts. The society is interested in collecting and scanning any related materials and urges public participation.

Summer hours ended on August 22nd, and we had to say goodbye to our summer students. In addition to welcoming visitors, the summer students and a student volunteer uploaded several museum items to make them accessible online.

This was a great start! We have lots to do.
We greatly appreciate donations to help sustain these efforts and cover online hosting costs. To donate, please make a cheque payable to the Township of Athens and include a note on the memo line stating "Athens Museum Online Program." Please coordinate directly with the Township Office regarding your official tax donation receipt.
While viewing items online is convenient, nothing beats seeing them in person! We will be open Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, from September 5th to December 19th inclusive (unless otherwise posted).

Happy World Refrigeration Day! Before modern refrigeration there were ice boxes that held blocks of ice to keep food from spoiling. There were many cheese factories because milk could not travel for processing. You always knew which train car held the cheese as there was water from melted ice beneath it. With the invention of refrigeration, local factories disappeared as cheese making became more centralized.

A big thank you to Angie and Captain Kevin Hartley for designing, creating, and donating a sign for the Athens Fire Department display at the Athens Museum!
Thank you to the members of the Township of Athens Fire Department including Chief Bell and Deputy Chief Tom Fenn for making this evening more memorable and special by being on site. The new sign features the Bickle so it was a really nice surprise to see the Bickle driving up before the event!
Thank you to Darlene Noonan, Councilor Dancy, and Mayor Scott for partaking in the event with us.
P.S The Bickle is in the group photos taken in front of the Museum. As you can tell, the size of fire pumpers has changed a lot in the last 90 years! The new pumper was parked in front of the Medical Centre - you can see the top of the pumper behind the group. But, the Bickle is barely visible!

Happy National Sewing Machine Day! The woman who sewed the first Canadian Maple Leaf flag prototypes is Joan O'Malley (née Donovan). On November 6, 1964, she stitched the initial designs on a Singer sewing machine at her Ottawa home. Her dad was a home child and years ago she was at an Athens Home Child Celebration with her original machine.
