We are so happy to have this Heritage Fair project by Emma Hopkins on display at the Museum. Emma focused her research on the story of her great-grandfather Ernie Aker, a soldier with the North Shore Regiment who was seriously wounded during the D-Day landings. He lost his helmet song the way, and it eventually found its way to the Netherlands, then Ontario, and finally back to his family in Antigonish! Come see Emma’s project, and the helmet that inspired it, at the Museum!

On this Father's Day, we pay tribute to the many dads out there who sacrifice so much for their families.

Alexander Daniel MacDonald was a native of Beaver Meadow, Antigonish County, the son of Alexander Leo "Peddler" MacDonald and Catherine MacDonald. He met and married Mary Ann Cox from Cape Breton, and soon after they went west and settled at Eureka, California. There, Alex worked as a longshoreman and at one time a bartender, before he died in 1906. His widow died in 1948.
This photograph of Alex D. and his five eldest children was taken Feburary 19, 1890, the day Mary Ann gave birth to their sixth and youngest child, Mary Alice. According to Mary Alice's son, Jack Phegley, who gifted this copy of the photo to the donor's father, it was taken on that occasion "to get everyone out of the house before the big event."
Standing left to right: Alexander William, Alexander Daniel (father), John Henry, James Bernard, Annie Elizabeth. Seated is Joseph Vincent.

Today, on , and everyday, we honour and celebrate the rich history and living culture of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada. Here in Antigonish/Nalikitquniejk, we acknowledge the generations of Mi’kmaw who have loved and stewarded this land, and with whom we are privileged to share it.
