The beautiful Ottawa House is part of Sir Charles Tupper's story. He bought the Ottawa House property on August 5, 1871, as his summer home and named it "Ottawa House By-the-Sea" in honour of Confederation.

It is one of the most beautiful areas of Cumberland County and is now open for the summer.

Remembering How to Play: Community Memories of Christie Pond
Cumberland County Museum and Archives – Collections Announcement: The Cumberland County Museum and Archives is pleased to announce a new community-driven collecting initiative,

Remembering How to Play: Community Memories of Christie Pond.

The project seeks to preserve the stories, photographs, and personal recollections that capture Christie
Pond as a cherished place of gathering, exploration, and childhood adventure.

For generations, Christie Pond has been a backdrop for swimming, skating, family picnics, and the everyday rituals of growing up in Cumberland County.

As the landscape continues to change, and those with direct personal memories of Christie Pond begin to leave us, we are committed to documenting the lived experiences that shaped this beloved local landmark.

We invite community members to contribute materials that reflect their connection to Christie Pond, including:

 Personal photographs and home videos
 Written memories, diaries, or letters
 Recreational artifacts or ephemera
 Oral histories and recorded reflections

All contributions will help build a permanent archival record that honours the role of Christie Pond in our shared and cultural history. We also hope that the materials collected will be used by academics and community leaders for future research projects. Together, we can ensure that the ways we played-and the places that shaped us- are remembered for generations to come.

For more information or to discuss a potential donation, please contact the Cumberland County Museum and Archives at [email protected] or Zach Tingley at [email protected].

Today, we remember the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, formed in 1871. They joined forces with the 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade and were at Juno Beach on June 6th, 1944. Despite the horrors of that day, the North Novas kept pushing forward, true to their motto “Our footsteps will not allow us to go backwards”.

This photo from our archives shows a group of Highlander men taking a break at a farmer’s property in Five Islands, Nova Scotia, before continuing to their destination at Debert. The Amherst-Debert trek began on May 13th, 1941.

To see more about the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, we invite you to our museum to see what one of our summer students, Gavin, is putting together in the front living room of Grove Cottage.

An excerpt from Acadian Artist Claude Roussel's letter to the New Brunswick Museum's art curator is today's quote. His sculpture, La famille/Family, 1957, was the first piece of Roussel's sculpture to be purchased by a Canadian public art institution.

Thank you to the New Brunswick Museum for posting this today. We take our information from them.

Not a quote, but a question today, museum friends!

We have several photographs and glass negatives from Vivian Sargent in our collection, including this cyanotype quilt block of some familiar images.

Would anyone have information about Vivian and her family? I would like to put together a small exhibit of her photographs with our summer employees.

Please feel free to contact me at 902 667-2561/[email protected], or message me through our FB page.

Is there anyone who can do a cyanotype workshop for the museum patrons?
