History Alive

History Alive This page is maintained, sporadically, as a hobby. I am a reenactor - mostly Napoleonic and Great War periods - and a retired history teacher.

Living history fascinates me, so I try to share things, chosen merely because they strike my fancy and seem a I am currently able to provide living history presentations on World War One and the War of 1812, and the Fur Trade for high school and senior elementary school students and on Pioneer Life in Upper Canada for elementary students from Grades Three to Seven.

In August 1939, Clare Hollingworth had been a professional journalist for exactly one week. The Daily Telegraph had just hired her, and almost immediately sent her to Poland to cover the mounting tension between Warsaw and Berlin - tension most of Europe still hoped would resolve short of war.

Hollingworth had other instincts. She persuaded the British Consul-General in Katowice to lend her his chauffeured car so she could look for herself. Driving along the German-Polish border on August 28th, she watched the wind catch a set of camouflage netting and behind it, a staged force of German tanks, armored vehicles, and troops, positioned and waiting.

She filed the report that night. It ran as the lead story on the Telegraph's front page the next morning, describing a buildup most officials weren't yet willing to say out loud.

Four days later, on September 1st, she called the British Embassy in Warsaw to report that the invasion had begun. The line was met with skepticism so she opened her hotel window and held the receiver out, letting the sound of the advancing German forces answer for her. That call became the first confirmation the British Foreign Office received that Poland had been invaded, and that the war Europe had spent a decade trying to avoid had arrived.

She hadn't been a war correspondent. She'd been at the job for a week. What she had was the willingness to go look, and to trust what she saw over what she was told to expect. So today, let's give props to Clare for breaking the "scoop of the century."
