Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We encourage our followers to take time to pause, reflect, learn, and listen about the history and lasting impact of the residential school system in Canada.

For those of us living in the Mirror area, this history is not as distant as it may sometimes feel. The Ermineskin Residential School at Hobbema, now Maskwacîs, operated from 1895 to 1975 and was one of the residential schools that affected generations of Indigenous families in central Alberta.

As a museum dedicated to preserving and sharing local history, we believe that understanding our past means being willing to learn about all of the stories that have shaped the communities around us—including the difficult ones.

Truth and reconciliation is not something that belongs to one day. It is an ongoing journey that begins with listening, learning, remembering, and understanding.

Today, we remember the children that didn't make it home, honour the Survivors, and acknowledge the families and communities who continue to carry this history.

🧡 Every Child Matters.

The Tall Spruce

Mirror once had its own natural landmark, a remarkable spruce tree among its fellow trees, coequally named the Tall Spruce. In its 111 year lifespan, the Tall Spruce grew to around seventy feet tall and six feet in circumference around the base.

Due to its immense size, the Tall Spruce could be identified from long distances in many different directions, resulting in the area being called the tall spruce district.

Unfortunately, the Tall Spruce met an untimely demise in August of 1985, having been standing since 1874, when a violent windstorm coming from the west brought the giant down. In an sad sense of irony, the tree's lonely stance and tall stature was its downfall as it was not sheltered by any nearby trees.

We here at the museum are planning something to commemorate the Tall Spruce, stay tuned for more details! In the meantime, we have a few cross-section pieces of the Tall Spruce here for viewing!

This Month in History: August

Did you know that Mirror originally had its own train station? Back in 1911, when Mirror was a division point, the Grand Pacific Trunk built a Design E rail station (a larger version of the Type E) right on our front doorstep!

The rail station proudly served for many years, with stucco being applied to the exterior walls in 1944, a touch of style until its final days, where it was unfortunately lost to a fire in August of 1975.

Also built nearby was the Mirror roundhouse and turntable, which was constructed around the same time as the station. As diesel replaced steam engines in the 1950's, trains were capable of going between the two major Albertan cities without changing crews. This change caused the heavy steam-turning facilities to become obsolete, prompting their deconstruction.
