National Art Gallery of The Bahamas NAGB is an art museum collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting historic and contemporary Bahamian art. In 1996, Prime Minister Hubert A.

Established by an Act of Parliament, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is the first institution of its kind in the history of The Bahamas. Ingraham first announced the establishment of The National Art Gallery as part of an expanded system of museums. The Government’s initiative to support a national art gallery reflects an understanding of how such institutions assist in nation-building. It represents a vision that a national art gallery can be a place for Bahamians to view an important aspect of their culture. It also anticipates that the National Art Gallery will become a showpiece for tourism - a place where visitors from abroad can view the finest Bahamian artwork. After considering various locations, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas was invited to occupy Villa Doyle, a period building dating back to the 1860s. Because of its history, location and beauty, there can be few sites more fitting to house the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas than this building. Completed in the 1860s, its owner Sir William Doyle was Chief Justice of The Bahamas and the first Bahamian to be knighted. After the addition of a ballroom in the 1920s, it became one of Nassau’s stately homes and a prized location for local entertainment. Positioned on the rise overlooking the top of West Street, Villa Doyle is typical of great houses of earlier centuries with balconies that offer a commanding view of the city and the sea. It is located in the heart of historic “Old Nassau” and is within easy walking distance of Nassau’s main commercial district. Villa Doyle’s restoration took almost seven years to complete involving a dedicated team of professionals and consultants under the supervision of architect Anthony Jervis and the National Art Gallery’s Committee chaired by Dr Gail Saunders. Because of the time taken to complete the restoration and transformation of Villa Doyle, the National Art Gallery now boasts museum-grade lighting, and climate, fire and security controls, which are on par with similar galleries internationally.

Exploring the artistic legacy of Bahamian master artist Maxwell Taylor!

We had a wonderful time learning about the life and work of Maxwell Taylor during a special presentation and printmaking workshop led by NAGB Curatorial Director, Jodi Minnis-Rolle.

The session explored Taylor’s artistic journey, his studies in printmaking, and the lasting influence of his work on Bahamian art. Participants then had the opportunity to put what they learned into practice, creating their own prints inspired by the techniques explored during the workshop.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an afternoon of learning, creativity, and appreciation for one of The Bahamas’ most influential artists!

Make yourself at home!

This year at FUZE Caribbean Art Fair, the NAGB presents 'The Good Living Room', an exploration of Bahamian interiors, inspired by FUZE’s theme, 'Coming Home'.

'The Good Living Room' is modeled after the delineation of public and private familial space even within one’s own home. 'The Good Living Room' is a space of preservation and hosting, often off limits to children and other family members. Our space features works by Amos Ferguson, Tamika Galanis, Antonius Roberts, Dave Smith, and Maxwell Taylor.

Come and sit with us at FUZE, and learn more about the NAGB’s mission to preserve, celebrate, and share Bahamian art and culture.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the first edition of Rhythm & Rhyme: A Night of Music, Words, and Performance!

We had an incredible evening celebrating the power of storytelling through poetry, music, and performance. Inspired by the writings and legacy of Bahamian cultural pioneer Patricia Glinton-Meicholas, we enjoyed moving poetry performances by kevanté a.c. Cash, Terran Brice, Tanicia Pratt, a reading of Miss Annie by Princess Pratt, alongside the vibrant rhythms of Ubuntu Drumming and the Flour Cake Boys.

We are grateful to everyone who shared their talents and joined us for this special evening. We look forward to hosting more nights like these and welcoming even more of you!

The inspiration doesn’t end here! Visit the NAGB and explore The Gaulin Woman: Uncovering Our Bahamian Selves, an exhibition celebrating the work and cultural contributions of Patricia Glinton-Meicholas.

Happy National Heroes Day from the NAGB!

This National Heroes Day, NAGB celebrates the life and legacy of Patricia Glinton-Meicholas (1950–2025), a pioneering Bahamian writer, educator, cultural historian and advocate for the arts.

Throughout her career, Glinton-Meicholas dedicated herself to preserving Bahamian stories and expanding the ways we understand our national identity. From her years as an educator at the College of The Bahamas to her influential publications, including An Evening in Guanima, Chasing Light and Bahamian Art 1492–1992, she helped bring Bahamian folklore, literature and visual art into greater conversation with one another.

Her work expressed the importance of telling our own stories, recognising our artists and ensuring that Bahamian cultural expression remained accessible to future generations.

As we recognise the individuals whose contributions have shaped our nation, we honour Glinton-Meicholas as one of our cultural pioneers, whose dedication continues to inspire the creative community.

Her legacy lives on at the NAGB through The Gaulin Woman: Uncovering Our Bahamian Selves, an exhibition exploring her influence on Bahamian artists, storytelling and cultural identity. We invite you to visit the Museum and experience this celebration of a woman who helped us better understand the value of our own stories.
