โ€œThe pineapple is said to have been introduced into these islands by certain German refugees from the Palatinate about 1720, who after stocking the island of Eleuthera with its most successful fruit were forced to leave owing to the treatment they received at the hands of Governor Fitzwilliam. The cultivation of the fruit became general and in early books mention is made of several varieties of Ananas or pineapples being exported to all parts of America. A plantation of pineapples, yams, lemons and coffee was said to yield a profit of 2,000 pieces of eight. It was not until 1842 that the first cargo was shipped to England, where Bahamas pineapples had a monopoly for some time, the fruit which was shipped in bulk bringing as much as four, six and eight shillings each. In recent years, Florida, Cuba and Hawaii have become serious competitors in the American market and The Bahamas have lost ground. This was for many years the only agricultural industry persistently and intelligently followed in the colony, but unfortunately it has not had the benefit of strict scientific supervision and investigation. Thousands of acres of good virgin pineapple land are however still available and await capital and skilled cultivation, but the present crop of fruit was not sufficient for the capacity of the canning factory at Nassau with the result that the J.S. Johnson Co., which had for so many years done so much to encourage the industry in the colony has had to close down.โ€
