The Current is proud to present The Things We Carry, a duo exhibition by Bahamian artists Kendra Frorup and Averia Wright, created for Transforming Spaces 2026: Chasing Light.

On view May 30 – June 28, 2026 at The Current Gallery (Rotunda Shops), the exhibition brings together new works that explore cultural memory as something inherited, preserved, and carried through generations. Through assemblage, sewing, printmaking, weaving, sculpture, and preservation, Frorup and Wright transform native fruits, medicinal plants, raffia, burlap, found objects, and cast materials into layered contemporary heirlooms rooted in Bahamian histories, traditions, healing practices, and everyday life.

Drawing from memories of farming, craft making, and the textures of home, these works reflect on the stories, materials, and knowledge we carry forward. In dialogue with this year’s TS theme, Chasing Light, the exhibition considers light as a force of renewal and recognition — illuminating the ways cultural memory continues to endure through objects, traditions, and shared experience.

Experience the exhibition during the Transforming Spaces 2026 art bus tour weekend on May 30–31. Tour tickets are available via nagb.org.bs. For more information visit .

Join us again for the exhibition’s closing reception on June 25th from 6PM – 8PM.

Still reflecting on an incredible week at 1-54 New York. 🤍

We are so grateful to have been part of the conversation this year, sharing the works and practices of Bahamian artists Kendra Frorup and Maxwell Taylor with such an engaged international audience. The week was filled with meaningful exchanges, new connections, familiar faces, and moments that reminded us why this work matters so deeply.

Thank you to everyone who visited our booth, spent time with the artists and works, and supported The Current throughout the fair. We are leaving this experience feeling inspired, proud, and excited for what continues to grow from these conversations and connections.

‼️🇧🇸 242 in the 212 🇺🇸‼️

A special moment bringing together Bahamian artists exhibiting across two neighboring booths at 1-54 NYC 2026 (). Represented by The Current at Booth 13 are Kendra Frorup and Maxwell Taylor, while Black Pony Gallery () presents works by Dede Brown, Jason Bennett, and Tyrone Ferguson at Booth 15.

It’s exciting to see Bahamian contemporary art represented so strongly within the fair this year — creating dialogue across generations, practices, and perspectives just one step away from each other.

If you’re visiting 1-54 this weekend, be sure to stop by both booths and experience these incredible presentations.

Kendra Frorup’s practice explores memory, materiality, and the sensory language of home through layered assemblage and sculptural forms. Drawing from the textures, flora, and cultural histories of The Bahamas, her works transform familiar objects into contemporary archives — carrying traces of labor, preservation, and lived experience.

Featured as part of The Current’s presentation at 1-54 New York, Frorup’s work sits within broader conversations around diaspora, inheritance, and the evolving language of Caribbean contemporary art.

We look forward to welcoming guests to Booth 13 today and tomorrow for the final days of the fair.

We’re honored to be featured in a recent article by Seph Rodney for Hyperallergic spotlighting this year’s edition of 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair.

The article highlights Kendra Frorup’s work A Light Sense (2022), presented by The Current: Baha Mar Gallery & Art Center at Booth 13, describing the piece as transforming the sugar apple from “specimen to jewel” within the Bahamian ecosystem.

Thank you to Seph Rodney and Hyperallergic for including The Current within this important conversation around materiality, abstraction, and contemporary practices across Africa and its diaspora.
