Lucia Nogueira (Brazil, 1950 – United Kingdom, 1998) developed her artistic career in London, where she lived from 1975 onwards. In a brief yet decisive career for contemporary sculpture, she established a singular visual language spanning sculpture, installation, drawing, and video, exploring the relationships between object, language, and space.

After studying journalism and communication in Brasília and photography in Washington, D.C., she moved to the United Kingdom, where she graduated in painting from Chelsea College of Art and the Central School of Art and Design. Throughout her practice, she brought together everyday and industrial materials in compositions of remarkable formal precision, in which the familiar and the strange remain in constant tension.

Recognized for expanding the boundaries of sculpture through unexpected associations between objects and materials, Lucia Nogueira received the Fondation Cartier fellowship in Versailles (1993) and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award (1996). In 2007, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Fundação de Serralves, in Porto, organized a retrospective dedicated to her work. In 2018, her work was featured in the 33rd Bienal de São Paulo. Her works are held in major international collections, including Tate (London), Arts Council England, the Henry Moore Foundation, Fundação de Serralves (Porto), Museu Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbon), MACBA (Barcelona), and the Art Institute of Chicago.

From August 7th, Gomide&Co presents ‘Smoke’, the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. Bringing together sculptures, drawings, and an audiovisual work presented in Brazil for the first time, the exhibition offers an overview of Lucia Nogueira’s production between the late 1980s and the mid-1990s. The exhibition features a critical essay by Carina Bukuts.

Created during the period when Antonio Dias (Brazil, 1944–2018) was living in Milan, 'The Wandering Monument' (1970) and 'The Night' (1970) belong to a body of work in which the artist displaced painting from its representational function, replacing the image with words, graphic structures, and fields of apparent emptiness. Drawing on procedures associated with design and printed communication, Dias transformed painting into a space of mental projection and meaning-making.

In 'The Wandering Monument', the monument announced in the title appears not as a fixed construction, but as an open proposition, situated within the recurring field of monuments, territories, and landscapes that runs throughout his work of the period. Paint splatters evoking sand, dust, or cosmic landscapes are articulated with the empty central square and the word “desert,” constructing a kind of ambiguous cartography between physical space and imagination.

In 'The Night', the large dark surface, interrupted only by the inscription “THE NIGHT” and graphic markers at the corners of the composition, brings the work close to the logic of layout design, as if the painting operated simultaneously as image and project. Rather than representing the night, Dias constructs an open structure in which text and graphic elements function as signs capable of activating mental images.

The works are currently on view at Gomide&Co’s and Sprovieri’s booths, respectively, during Art Basel 2026. Both galleries, in collaboration with Gio Marconi and Nara Roesler, are also presenting an installation by Antonio Dias in the Unlimited sector. Art Basel 2026 remains on view at Messe Basel through Sunday (Jun 21).

'Pares ímpares' (2011/2013) and 'Inserções em Circuitos Ideológicos: Projeto Coca-Cola' (1970) by Cildo Meireles (Brazil, 1948) bring together two distinct moments in a trajectory marked by investigations into the relationships between perception, circulation, and the construction of meaning.

In 'Pares ímpares', a minimal operation brings together seemingly equivalent elements that, upon closer observation, reveal subtle differences and produce a state of perceptual instability. Small cracks in the lenses interrupt the habitual function of the glasses and transform the incidence of light into an active component of the work, causing reflections and visual interferences to vary according to the viewer’s position.

In 'Inserções em Circuitos Ideológicos: Projeto Coca-Cola', conceived during the Brazilian military dictatorship, Meireles shifts the work into everyday systems of distribution and communication. By inserting messages into returnable Coca-Cola bottles and placing them back into commercial circulation, he transforms the circuit itself into artistic material and proposes a reflection on the ways ideas, values, and structures of power circulate socially.

Separated by more than four decades, the two works reveal the persistence of central concerns in Meireles’s practice, in which the work is realized through the encounter between object, perception, and viewer participation.

The works are on view at Gomide&Co’s booth G8 during Art Basel 2026, which remains on view at Messe Basel through Sunday (Jun 21).

Art Basel 2026 opens to the public tomorrow (Thursday, June 18th). Visit us at booth G8!

For this edition of the fair, Gomide&Co presents a selection that brings together artists from different generations and contexts, articulating practices that investigate the relationships between language, space, materiality, and the circulation of meaning.

Among others, the presentation features works by Marcel Broodthaers, Mira Schendel, and Lenora de Barros, who explore the relationships between word, sign, and image; by Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Clark, and Lygia Pape, whose practices expanded the boundaries of abstraction and participation; and by Antonio Dias, Cildo Meireles, and León Ferrari, whose works incorporate critical dimensions related to the circulation of information, values, and structures of power. The selection also includes works by Geraldo de Barros, Lorenzato, and Lawrence Weiner, among others, highlighting different ways of understanding art as a field of symbolic construction and meaning-making.

Art Basel 2026 takes place at Messe Basel through Sunday, June 21st.

Unveiled at the fair | Today (Tuesday, Jun 16), Gomide&Co presents the works selected for Basel Exclusive, a new initiative developed by Art Basel for the 2026 edition of the fair. Conceived in dialogue with participating galleries, the project brings together works reserved to be revealed only from the official opening of the event.

The gallery’s selection for the initiative features works by Lenora de Barros, Geraldo de Barros, Hélio Oiticica, and Lorenzato, artists whose practices marked pivotal moments in Brazilian art. Spanning language and image, perception and form, geometric abstraction and spatial experience, the works on view highlight different modes of constructing meaning throughout the twentieth century.

From visual poetry and experiments with language to the Concrete and Neo-Concrete investigations that redefined the relationships between plane, space, and perception, as well as Lorenzato’s singular approach to landscape painting, the selection proposes connections between key trajectories in modern and contemporary Brazilian art.

Visit Gomide&Co’s booth G8 and discover the works selected for Basel Exclusive. Art Basel 2026 takes place at Messe Basel, Switzerland, from June 16th to 21st.

Daqui a pouco!

Starting soon! Today (May 28, 6 pm), Gomide&Co opens ‘Sandra Vásquez de la Horra: todo lo que vibra’, the Chilean artist’s first solo exhibition in Brazil. Curated by Fernanda Morse, the exhibition brings together drawings produced over the last five years. On the occasion of the opening, there will be a guided tour with the curator.

Based in Berlin, Vásquez de la Horra (Chile, 1967) has developed a practice marked by the convergence of distinct symbolic, spiritual, and cultural matrices. In her works, references to Andean Indigenous cosmologies, Santería, and imaginaries related to myth, dreams, and transformation unfold through hybrid narratives in which body, nature, and spirituality appear deeply interconnected.

With an internationally established career, the artist participated in the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) and recently presented a career-spanning exhibition at the Denver Art Museum (2024), curated by Raphael Fonseca, as well as her first institutional retrospective in Europe, at Haus der Kunst, Munich (2025).
