Rein Dufait (b. 1990) creates layered works that, though presented as paintings, retain deeply sculptural qualities: relief, shifting viewpoints, material presence and spatiality. Working at the intersection of sculpture, painting and drawing, he brings together unexpected elements—cardboard, sand, wood, plexiglass, acrylic resin, pigment and pastel—allowing each gesture and trace of making to remain visible.

Agnes Maes (1942–2016, Belgium) moves between figuration and abstraction with a deeply sensual command of colour, light, and brushstroke. Trained by Roger Raveel and in regular dialogue with Raoul De Keyser, she developed a language distinctly her own — rooted in the play of light and shadow across architectural space, often enriched with Latin inscriptions which could guide or misguide the viewer's gaze and understanding. Translucent painted screens, laid over one or more passages on the canvas, draw the viewer into the space behind the image. Edith Doove called her work "grievously underrecognised"; Bert Popelier put it more bluntly: "Agnes Maes is a master."

Her work is held in numerous private collections. Public collections include Museum Voorlinden (Wassenaar), Mu.ZEE (Ostend), Musée d'Ixelles (Brussels), Mudel (Deinze), the Collection of the Federal State, the Collection of the Flemish Community, Collection Nationale Bank, Collection DEXIA, The Peter Stuyvesant Collection, and Collection Centraal Beheer (Apeldoorn).

Dirk Zoete (b. 1969) is a Belgian artist whose work grows from drawing — the foundation of a universe filled with plants, invented characters, architectural forms and staged scenarios. His practice embraces playful experimentation and continual reworking: sketches become models, models return to drawings, and images evolve through repetition and variation.

Dirk Zoete's oeuvre spans a wide spectrum of media – from drawings, sculptures, and installations to printing techniques, (stop motion) films and, since 2023, paintings on canvas and panel.

Johan De Wilde (b. 1964) is a Belgian, Ghent-based artist known for his meticulous, layered pencil drawings on archival cardboard — constructed almost like paintings, where horizontal and vertical lines form subtle shapes, tonal rhythms and quiet suggestions of figuration. His slow, meditative practice stands in gentle opposition to the speed of the digital age, inviting viewers into a concentrated experience of time and perception.

His works are held in major public collections, including S.M.A.K., MAC’s Grand Hornu and the National Bank of Belgium.

Brigitte Stahl (b. 1964, Stuttgart) takes found, discarded objects and materials (‘objets trouvés’) as the starting point for her work. Stripped of their original function, these objects are subjected to an intensive process of deconstruction and transformation. They are taken apart, processed, and subsequently reassembled into autonomous sculptures.

In this creative process, diverse material properties and colors—often in extreme contrast to one another—play a crucial role. Stahl connects, interweaves, knots, wraps, and squashes the materials to arrive at entirely new, unexpected structures. The results possess a mysterious, fragmented aura and an elusive poetry.

A common thread running through Stahl’s oeuvre is the concept of ‘folding,’ with its inherent ambivalence of revealing and concealing. In her most recent works, the artist combines textiles, fabrics, wood, concrete, and clay. The individual works not only relate to the surrounding space but also interact strongly with one another.

Klaas Kloosterboer (b. 1959) is a prominent Dutch artist known for his dynamic and experimental approach to art. His work, often multidisciplinary, explores the tension between abstraction and action, influenced by movements like Fluxus and Zero. Kloosterboer’s art is a physical experience, engaging in a cycle of construction, destruction, and reconstruction, challenging the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. He tests and reinvents his primary medium, painting, with each creation, pushing it to its limits to discover new expressions and forms. Kloosterboer’s innovative practices have been showcased internationally, marking him as a significant figure in contemporary Dutch art.

His work is included in Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Dordrechts Museum, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Museum Voorlinden, Fries Museum, LAM Museum Lisse, Museum Beelden aan Zee, SCHUNCK, Textielmuseum, FENIX Landverhuizersmuseum Rotterdam and Kröller-Müller Museum.

Join us for the final days of ‘Fiha ma fiha’, Marie Zolamian’s () first exhibition with the gallery. Bringing together a new body of paintings, the exhibition follows her acclaimed solo presentation at WIELS earlier this year.

‘Fiha ma fiha’
6 September – 10 October 2026

Marie Zolamian (b. 1975, Beirut | lives and works in Liège) is a Belgian-Lebanese artist of Armenian descent. Drawing on memories, dreams and references from Eastern and Western art histories, she creates paintings that explore identity, belonging and the intersections of personal and collective histories.

The title 'Fiha ma fiha' draws on 'Fihi ma fihi' — literally, “Inside, what is inside” — a title attributed to a work of Persian prose by the 13th-century poet and mystic Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī. Zolamian shifts the masculine fihi (“in him”) to the feminine fiha (“in her”), opening the phrase towards painting, the image, memory, interiority — and perhaps the exhibition itself.

In Arabic, fihi can also mean “there is,” while ma fihi suggests “there is not.” Presence and absence appear together: there is / there is not. Through its repetition and rhythmic structure, 'Fiha ma fiha' takes on the quality of a formula or incantation — something that acts before it is understood.
