We are delighted to invite you to the new exhibition at our Brussels gallery, showcasing the works of two exceptionally talented emerging artists: Magdalena Bożyk and Paula Gontarek.

Both creators are recipients of the Katarzyna Napiórkowska Art Gallery Awards, granted during the prestigious 43rd Władysław Strzemiński Fine Arts Competition in partnership with the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź.

This exhibition at Mont des Arts aligns with our ongoing mission to support and promote the new generation of contemporary artists on the international stage.

Paula Gontarek combines a variety of artistic techniques in her practice, ranging from traditional printmaking to oil and watercolor painting. Her compelling works have already been featured in numerous international exhibitions across Japan, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and France.

Magdalena Bożyk primarily utilizes screen printing and painting to explore themes of everyday life, routine, and forgetfulness. Her art thrives on the unspoken and hidden nuances, extending an open invitation for the audience to form their own independent interpretations.

Exhibition Dates: September 5 – October 5, 2026 (Exhibition visible 24/7)

Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930–2017) was one of the most visionary figures in contemporary art. While internationally renowned as a sculptor, her work spanned painting, drawing, printmaking, and groundbreaking spatial installations.

We are proud to present her extraordinary works at the Katarzyna Napiórkowska Art Gallery in Warsaw! ✨

Revolutionizing Fiber Art: The "Abakans"

Her global breakthrough came in the 1960s when she completely redefined fiber art. Abandoning traditional, flat tapestries, she created massive, three-dimensional, organic forms woven from sisal and wool, known as "Abakans."

These monumental, suspended structural works resembled giant cocoons or organic entities. This groundbreaking series earned her the Grand Prix at the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1965, catapulting her onto the global stage.

Exploring the Human Condition

In subsequent decades, she expanded into rigid materials like burlap hardened with resin, bronze, wood, and stone. Her mature work deeply explored mass society and anonymity through iconic series like "Crowds" and "Backs"—installations featuring dozens of hollow, headless human figures.

Arboreal Architecture for Paris

Abakanowicz was also a pioneer in integrating sculpture with urban space. Her visionary arboreal architecture project for Paris proposed merging organic, tree-like sculptural structures directly into the metropolitan fabric, far ahead of its time in anticipating modern concepts of ecological architecture and urban greening.

Legacy

Her works are housed in the world's most prestigious museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. She fundamentally changed how we experience space, materiality, and the human form.
