Gregg Baker Asian Art carries one of the largest collections of Japanese screens in Europe, Buddhist

Established in Mayfair in 1985, and on Kensington Church Street, London, the gallery is now located in Brussels, Belgium. The gallery focuses on antique Japanese paper screens with the largest stock in Europe. Our works of art range from metalwork, in the form of flower vessels and sculpture, to lacquer ware, cloisonné, scrolls, scholar's objects and Buddhist sculpture not only from Japan but also

selected works from China and Korea. We have been a strong supporter of Asian Art in London since its inception in 1997, holding a themed exhibition in the autumn of each year. In an effort to raise awareness of Japanese art, we give gallery talks to clients and to students from both SOAS and the British Museum which is always a great pleasure. We have been instrumental in advising and building collections for clients and supplying additions to the collections of museums in Great Britain, the Netherlands and the U.S.A.

Back at the gallery and celebrating our return with these delightful Karako!

Looking at the details, these delightful children are engaged in various playful activities. Some are executing calligraphy, painting, or playing go, while some are joyfully leading a hanaguruma (flower cart) with a flower basket with a drum and possibly other music and song, suggesting the theme of the 'four arts' of the Chinese scholar — calligraphy, painting, the game of go and music — are cleverly incorporated into the scene. Others are watering or picking flowers, reading scrolls, watching a c**k fight, spinning tops, fishing, or trying to encourage a bird back in to its cage, representing the innocence and happiness of childhood in a variety of ways.

Recently sold, these elegant sliding doors are painted in ink and colour with purple and white kakitsubata (irises) growing in a stream among shimmering golden clouds.
A celebrated motif in Japanese art and literature, the kakitsubata evokes the famous Tale of Yatsuhashi from the Tales of Ise, in which the beauty of the irises inspires a poem with one of the five syllables of ka-ki-tsu-ba-ta at the end of each line.

Here is our recently sold two-fold paper screen painted by Ōson Hōitsu.

A two-fold paper screen painted in ink and colour on a gold ground with a karasu (crow) perched in a kaki (persimmon) tree holding a ripened fruit in its mouth.

Hōitsu first studied painting in the Kanō style but his unending curiosity led him to study almost every major contemporary painting style such as Ukiyo-e, the Maruyama school and Nanga (literati painting) before devoting his considerable skills to Rimpa.
In 1797 Hōitsu became a monk an act which relieved him from his formal family obligations allowing him to study old masters such as Ogata Korin (1658-1716) and his brother Ogata Kenzan (1663-1743) in great depth. This study eventually led to Hoitsu publishing three books of woodblock prints, two dedicated to the works of the Ogata brothers and the third to his own oeuvre; Kōrin Hyakuzu (1815), Kenzan Iboku Gafu (1823), and Oson Gafu respectively.

yamabuki (kerria), tanpopo (dandelions), sakuraso (Japanese primrose), sumire (violet), utsugi (deutzias), botan (peonies), kakitsubata (irises), nadeshiko (pinks), ajisai (hydrangea), keshi (poppies), kikyo (Chinese bellflower), hagi (bush clover), ominaeshi (patrinia), kiku (chrysanthemums), fuyo (cotton rosemallow), fujibakama (fragrant eupatorium), susuki (Chinese silver grass), shion (aster), rindo (Japanese gentian), suisen (narcissus) and omoto (Japanese sacred lily).

Some of you may have recognized our Lacquer Cabinet with Mother-of-Pearl Inlays in our recent storage photograph. Here it is in all its glory, now presented in full light.

A small, table top sized, sloping stile cabinet, the open display section with a back panel inlaid with mother of pearl on the black lacquer ground with two open flowers on leafy stems, the spandrels and apron to the front inlaid with stylised sprigs of flowers. The stiles which slope inwards towards the top on both front and side elevations are similarly inlaid, as are the horizontal rails above and below the two doors. The single panel doors, with no central stile, and with no supporting transverse stretchers to the reverse, are inlaid with flowering plants again with stylised flowers to the cushion moulded frames. The hinges and lock plates of gilded brass have re-entrant corners and engraved decoration to the ground and are retained by split pins. The simply shaped apron again repeats the stylised flower design of the spandrels and cushion moulded stiles and door frames.

Kagawa Kageki (1768-1843) is a Japanese poet of tanka (Japanese short poems), active in late Edo period. He was born in Tottori prefecture and liked reading and calligraphy from an early age. At the age of 15 he is known to have completed the contemporary translation of Hyakunin isshu, a classical Japanese anthology of one hundred poets compiled by Fujiwara no Teika (1162-1241), At 26, he moved to Kyoto and was adopted by the poet Kagawa Kagemoto (1745-1821). In Kyoto, he changed his name to Kageki and served the Tokudaiji Family, one of aristocratic families of the imperial court. He attended many aristocratic utakai (poetry reading gathering) where participants read tanka poetry on a common theme in front of an audience. Each poem slip on this screen has a theme at the top of the sheet and it is possible that these poems were read at one such poetry meeting.
