“PAX LIBERTAS MUNDI” - Luca Madrassi, late 19th century

“Peace and freedom of the world”.

A message that resonated strongly at the end of the 19th century, and still does today. Madrassi gives it form through a draped female figure standing on a globe, arms open in a gesture of elevation and universality, while a putto at her feet presents the inscribed scroll.

Known mainly through bronze editions, this Carrara marble version offers a particularly refined and accomplished expression of Madrassi’s work.

“ONDINE” - Albert Desenfans, circa 1890

Carved from white Carrara marble, Ondine depicts a naiad leaning toward an unseen stream - the freshwater nymphs of classical mythology who were gardians of rivers, springs, and fountains.

Albert Desenfans (1845–1931), trained at the Royal Academy of Brussels, built an acclaimed career exhibiting in Belgian and international salons from 1866. His sculptures adorn several of Brussels’ most important monuments, including the City Hall, the Broodhuis, and the Palace of Justice.

Best known for his monumental bronze of General Chazal, Ondine reflects another facet of his work, one centred on mythology and the human form.

The composition exists in only two known versions: the present marble and a bronze cast of identical dimensions.

« THE THREE GRACES » - After Antonio Canova, late 19th century

Few compositions in art have proven as enduring as Canova’s Three Graces. Since the original was completed in 1817, sculptors across the world returned to it as a meditation on what marble could do with the human form.

This late 19th century white Carrara marble version, likely French, stands among the most accomplished interpretations of the model. The hands, the drapery, the flowing hair - carved with equal care on every side. The surface carries the particular clarity and softness that only fine-grained Carrara achieves at this level of ex*****on.

« DUCK » - August Gaul, 1911

Before Pompon, there was Gaul. German sculptor August Gaul was among the first to ask what sculpture could look like if it stripped the animal down to its essence - no anecdote, no decorative detail, just volume, weight, and presence.

Where his contemporaries detailed every feather, Gaul reduced the duck to a single continuous curve, head gently turned, one foot lifted. Fine incisions worked into the bronze after casting suggest plumage without describing it. The result is a bird that feels both entirely alive and strangely timeless.

This bronze originates from the duck fountain Gaul designed in 1911 for the forecourt of the Renaissance-Theater in Berlin - figures from the same ensemble are held today at the Giersch Museum of Goethe University in Frankfurt. Cast by the Hermann Noack foundry in Berlin-Friedenau, the workshop Gaul trusted throughout his career.

« THE SAP » - Raoul Larche, c. 1900

Spring, as Raoul Larche imagined it, doesn’t arrive gently. It takes hold of the body - arms thrown open to the sky, branches coiling around bare flesh, buds breaking at every turn.

This marble work is one of his most personal works: the face is that of Georgette Lecoeur, his wife, who appears throughout his allegorical figures as a quiet constant.

First shown at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1893, the work earned Larche a first-class medal and never left the center of his practice.

A photograph taken in Henri Godet’s studio around 1900, now at the Musée d’Orsay, shows it standing among the works he held closest.

“DRAPED WOMAN” - Victor Rousseau, c. 1910

The moment before the movement, where time stands still for a few seconds.

Belgian sculptor Victor Rousseau wasn’t interested in capturing motion itself. What he sought was the charged instant surrounding it: what he described as “moments of calm followed by dazzlement, where the soul shows through at the surface of the material.”

In Draped Woman, that vision takes form in a woman mid-step, head inclined, right hand raised to her temple, suspended in a pause that holds more meaning than any gesture in full flight.

Rousseau engraved ÉPREUVE UNIQUE into the bronze himself - a deliberate choice to limit this model to a single cast, in this format alone. Executed by the Fonderie Nationale des Bronzes J. Petermann in Saint-Gilles, the Brussels foundry he returned to throughout his career, this work stands as a documented unicum within his production.
