At Alain Hens, we depart from a different perception on furniture. We try to offer an alternative to mass -(re) produced furniture by looking for originality in design and finish, furniture that is produced on a small scale, furniture that needs no ornaments or decoration. In doing this, we try to look further than trends and marketability, to anticipate and thus have a hand in creating new trends.

An elegant example of Veranneman’s early exploration of proportion, transparency and architectural form.

Italian pendant lamp by Lumen, Milan, c. 1952.

Brass, lacquered metal and nylon diffuser. Three light sources combining reflected ceiling light with an indirect downlight, creating a remarkably soft and sculptural illumination.

An elegant post-war Italian design, often mistakenly attributed to Angelo Lelli for Arredoluce due to its strong stylistic resemblance, yet produced by Lumen.

One of the interesting things about the traditional roll-top desk is that it was originally designed to allow people to quickly hide and protect documents without having to clear the entire workspace.

By simply sliding the tambour shut, papers, letters and personal objects instantly disappeared into the architecture of the desk itself — combining practicality, privacy and craftsmanship in a remarkably elegant way.

Teco by William Sawaya for Sawaya & Moroni reinterprets this historical typology in an almost sculptural postmodern form, transforming the classic roll-top desk into something much closer to an architectural object.

1989 — ‘Teco’ architectural rolltop desk
Sawaya & Moroni, Milano.

An extraordinary architectural writing desk produced in an exceptionally small number. Entirely handcrafted in Italy in pearwood and steel, the piece combines postmodern design with the tradition of high Italian cabinetmaking.

The sculptural cylindrical form opens into a remarkably refined interior with integrated drawers and hidden compartments, revealing the obsessive level of craftsmanship behind the piece. According to information received from Sawaya & Moroni, only a handful of examples were ever produced.

More than a functional desk, Teco approaches the presence of an architectural cabinet sculpture, balancing geometry, material precision and utility in a way rarely encountered in contemporary furniture production.
