“It is very important to me that the communities and people I photograph are involved in the process. I don’t steal images. When I arrive in a new place, I’m clear about what I’m doing there; people know that they are going to be photographed. I don’t have a telephoto lens or a tripod or a flash. In some ways, with the camera, I am asking to take photos. If they don’t give their consent, I don’t photograph.”

For Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide, photography is a way to explore oneself and the world. The exhibition Graciela Iturbide – Eyes to Fly With focuses on the work in her home country Mexico, a nation that was shaped by its diverse Indigenous cultures, such as the Maya, Zapotec, and Mexica (Aztec), as well as by the profound impact of Spanish colonialization. Graciela Iturbide is interested in ritual and myths as well as the encounters, fusions, and frictions between tradition and modernity.

Which plants, animals and objects do we share our homes with? And how do we coexist with them? In her series ‘In the Mother Tongue’, Lola Pertsowsky invites us to see domestic life and the everyday through fresh eyes.

The pictures in this series were taken at her mother’s house. It’s teeming with life. A fly perched on the leftovers from breakfast. The dishes waiting to be washed. A half-eaten slab of butter. A smartphone. A colony of ants. They all coexist under the same roof.

The objects we design for our convenience end up shaping us in turn. Pertsowsky’s camera circles her subjects. Her goal is not to document but to create a bond with whatever she is photographing.

We’re currently building up three new exhibitions, but that doesn’t mean the museum is closed. You can visit the exhibition Families at a reduced rate until 17 september.

In the Families exhibition we dive into the FOMU collection in search of family photos. In a time when motherhood, the nuclear family and the idea of ‘chosen family’ are being hotly debated, Families offers a surprising look at a topic that affects us all.

Coming up at FOMU: GRACIELA ITURBIDE

FOMU is proud to announce the first major retrospective of , one of Mexico’s most influential photographers, in Belgium. The exhibition has been developed in close consultation with the artist and comprises around 160 works, from iconic black-and-white photographs to rarely seen vintage prints, colour photos and contact prints. Together they offer a unique insight into over half a century of photographic work.

Join us for the festive opening night on 17 September from 7.45 pm. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome.

The title of the exhibition, Eyes to Fly With, is inspired by one of Iturbide’s self-portraits and refers to her vision of photography as a means of exploring both oneself and the world. In the exhibition, you will discover, among other things, the important societal and economic roles performed by women from the Zapotec community in Oaxaca.

Graciela Iturbide breaks with traditional conceptions of gender by placing women at the heart of her work. In the series White Fence, she investigates how identity is a product of factors like ancestry, living conditions and migration, and how communities continue to evolve and adapt over time.

depicts rituals, spirituality and the traditions that are a part of daily life – as in La Matanza, with its focus on slaughter and sacrifice, or her work on the Seri people. Also part of the exhibition are her intimate photos of Frida Kahlo’s bathroom – sealed off, along with many of the painter’s personal belongings, for fifty years after her death – and her rarely exhibited work from India and Bangladesh.

The exhibition was originally organized and produced by Foundation in collaboration with the artist, curated by Sophia Greiff and Melissa Harris.

Tom Lyon (Tom Lyon) documents the harsh realities of European border politics and control. By positioning himself alongside migrants and becoming personally involved in defending their rights, he turns the camera away from stereotypical and dominant representations of migration. Through a fluid interplay of archival aerial footage and his own images, the work moves into the arena itself: a space shaped by borders, barriers, and the obstacles people encounter while searching for safety. Within these systems, people remain visible, yet their humanity is often erased.

The camera confronts us with the environments in which this dehumanisation takes place.
Lyon challenges expectations of violence and the over-representation of certain images when it comes to migration. Instead, the work becomes a site for political confrontation, reflection, and collective debate. He invites viewers to step into the arena and confront their own position within this discourse.

This series is currently on show at FOMU as part of the exhibition .tiff 2026 – Emerging Belgian Photography.

Last chance to visit the exhibition Carrie Mae Weems – The Heart of the Matter at FOMU Antwerp

The Heart of the Matter is the first retrospective of influential American artist Carrie Mae Weems (1953) in Belgium. Through her incisive photographic works and video installations she explores themes of race, gender, power and memory.
Weems often appears in her photos as a subject, a guide and a muse.

Her experiences as a Black woman inform her exploration of ‘forgotten’ histories. She reveals places that are often left out of the picture: from intimate kitchen table settings to film sets, and from African-American churches to former plantations. Her work invokes personal stories to address the complexities and injustices of the world around us.

Yaqine Hamzaoui’s (yaqine Hamzaoui) work cannot be contained within a single category or framework – nor does it seek to be. It needs space to breathe, to live, and to take on new forms.

“Where most people would consider Yaqine an artist or photographer, I consider Yaqine to be a collector; the multitude of mediums through which she works are simply methods of gathering and organising memories, moments, places, faces, spaces, feelings and thoughts.”
- Visual Artist & Director TARONA about Yaqine’s work

During a journey to Morocco, Hamzaoui began a collaboration with the carpet weaver Kiltouma. This encounter came to reflect the essence of her artistic practice: searching for a freedom to create openly, without restriction, and always in relation with others. Although photography remains the foundation of her practice, she allows it to expand beyond the medium itself, opening up space for other art forms, collaborations, and encounters with people.

The work of yaqine Hamzaoui is currently on show at FOMU as part of the exhibition .tiff 2026 – Emerging Belgian Photography.
